Cricket 1886
AUG. 5,1886. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 819 NOTTS v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Some extraordinary cricket marked the second match of the season between these Counties, played at Nottingham, on Thursday last aud two following days. Rain interfered with the play several times on the opening day, and a storm caused the stumps to be drawn at a quarter to five on the following afternoon. Still some capital batting was shown on both sides, and altogether 664 runs were scoredwith only 18wickets down, giving a very high average of just over 51 runs. Gloucestershire going in first found the wicket easy, owing to the showers, and when play ceased on Thursday had made 192 for the loss of only two batsmen, Messrs. E. M. Grace and Page. The two amateurs had put on 83 runs for the first wicket, and this number Messrs. W. G. Grace and Radcliffe more than doubled, the former being 51 not out, the latter 49 not out, at the end of the day. On resuming on Friday morning the two not-outs continued to play excellent cricket until the score was 222, when Mr. Radcliffe was caught at long-on. He was in for three hours and twenty minutes, and his 66 was free from amistake, though he ought to have been run out early in his innings. As many as 131 runs had been added since the fall of the last wicket. Mr. Grace followed at 256, having been three hours and fifty minutes at the wickets. Though not faultless his innings was nevertheless a fine one. The rest of the batting was noticeable only for the good play of Mr. Brain, who carried his bat out for an admirably got 43. A curious incident occurred in connection with Painter’s retirement. Given in by the umpire on an appeal for a catch to the bowler he left his wicket under the impression that he was out, and Mr. Francis took his place. Notts, who had made 24 without the loss of a wicket on Friday night, showed exceptionally fine cricket on Saturday. Scotton was out at 51, but Barnes and Shrewsbury gave the Gloucestershire bowlers considerable trouble, and the total was 116 before Shrewsbury was driven on. to his wicket. Gunn and Barnes then offered a still more determined resist- acce, both batsmen hitting very freely. The partnership had produced 188 runs, when Barnes, who had scored 156 out of 253 during his stay, was bowled. With the exception of a let off at the wicket at 76 there was no actual chance in his^innings, though it was not without luck. Gunn, who had hit in fine style, and Flowers were not cut at the finish, when the score was 343 with only three bats men out. The home team were then 22 runs on with seven wickets to fall. LANCASHIRE. Heavy rain on the first two days caused this return match, finished at Dewsbury on Satur day, to be left uudecided. Yorkshire lost 7 wickets on Thursday for 97 runs, and as the state of the ground on Friday prevented a resumption there was little or no chance of a definite result. Rain, too, delayed the game on Saturday until half-past 12 o’clock, and during the time that remained 20wickets were secured for 175 runs. Lancashire began fairly well, and when Briggs was dismissed, the second wicket, the score was 40. After this, though, Bates and Emmett bowled with re markable effect, and the remaining batsmen only added 13 runs, Bates getting 6 wickets at a cost of 19 runs. In Yorkshire’s second in nings Bates and Ulyett played excellent cricket, and at the finish the home team were 116 runs on with three wickets still to fall. Attention has been called to the effective bowling of Bates and Emmett for Yorkshire. Watson’s figures, too, on the other side deserve notice. He bowled altogether 95 overs and two balls for 77 runs and 9 wickets. Y o r k s h ir e . First Innings. Second Innings.
