Cricket 1886
818 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. AUG. 5, 1886. always been selected to complete the eleven in an emergency. He has actually taken parti n four matches for them, though he has helped the side materially by fielding as a substitute, and with success, on eight other occasions. In the six innings he has had for the Aus tralians he has an aggregate of thirty runs, though in four of these he has been not out. On one occasion in particular he was of great use, and as will be well remembered he was in with Blackham when the Colonists beat Middlesex at Lord’s with only a wicket to spare. Though he is one of the diminutive order of cricketers, standing only 5-ft. 6-ins. high, he hits hard. Playing with great con fidence and nerve, he scores freely when set, and has in addition the reputation of playing an uphill game well. In the field he is very smart, and indeed is always seen to advantage. Being quick on his legs he covers a lot of ground and has in addition an accurate and smart return to the wicket. W in c h ’ s XL Second Innings, not out .........21 D u r in g the luncheon interval in the match Incogniti v. Sussex Club and Ground, at Brighton on Friday last, Rotert Thoms was presented in the pavilion with a handsome and valuable silver cup in recognition of his long and faithful services to the Incogniti Club. The presentation was made by Mr. George Fraser, who after reading a congratulatory letter from Mr. Augustus Hem ming, said, whilst referring to his long connection with the club, that Thoms had by his unvarying respectful behaviour and integrity so won the esteem of members of the Incogniti Club, that that he was looked on equally in the light of a friend and official. Thoms, under emotion, in reply said—and we give his words verbatim, “ Mr. George Fraser, I beg most sincerely and gratefully to thank you, and the members of the Incogniti Club, for this very kind gift, and the marked compliment that you have paid me. It is a source of pride to me to think and know, that I have for the past quarter of a century—in fact, from its first formation, when its members could be counted by the teens only—been the trusted and devoted servant of the Incogniti Club. And it is moat gratifying to see it now holding—as it has done for years-a premier position amongst the roving clubs of England. I have always endeavoured in my posi tion as an Umpire by keen watching, to do justice to the game, to th« best of my ability. And I can safely affirm—so do all my brother Umpires, who like myself areregularly employed in this onerous, anxious, and at times most worrying occupation— No mortal man ever yet was infallible, or ever will be, at least as a cricket Umpire, for the intri cacy of the game is such that the eye and ear will at times get deceived, but I have the inward satisfaction of knowing that any error of judg ment that I may have committed nas always been a mistake of the upper regions of my head, never once of my heart. I have from time to time re ceived many kindnesses and most generous sup port, not only from the executive of the Incogniti Club, but likewise from well known members, and also from others connected with the cricket Counties, notably Middlesex, and I wish that they were now all here to hear me return thanks, but I trust that these words will reach them through another source. These kindnesses are not only thoroughly engrafted on a retentive memory, but are still further engraven on my heart. Mr. George Fraser, I again most gratefully thank you and the Incogniti Club for this kind and valued gift to me, and my best wishes are ‘ Success to the Incogniti Club, and health and happiness to its members, and to cricketers, one and all ’ ” First Innings.
