Cricket 1886
802 OEICKET: A WEEKLY RECOED OF THE GAME. JULY 29,1886 was to his bowling—he got six wickets at a cost of only 33 runs—that the Derbyshire eleven were dismissed in the first innings for a poor total of 52. He finished up Kent’s last home match of 1884, too, with another success, taking five of the last seven wickets of Somer setshire at Tunbridge Wells for 27 runs. Last summer some of his achievements with the ball were particularly noteworthy. To his bowling was chiefly due the very creditable victory obtained by Kent, and not the full strength of the County, over Yorkshire at Sheffield, one of the best wins of the season. With the exception of Hall, none of the York shire batsmen could play him at all, and his figures will bear reproduction even now— Balls. Mdns. Runs. Wkts. First Innings .. 14.2 8 13 5 Second Innings .. 42 24 35 8 In both fixtures of the Canterbury week of 1885, he was very successful, and, indeed, his bowling during August was remarkably effec tive. One of the best of his achievements was at Tonbridge, where with Wootton he dis missed the Hampshire eleven in the first innings in fifty minutes for 26 from the bat, taking himself five wickets for 15 runs. This summer, so far, his most notable achievements have been in the Northern tour of the Kent eleven during the latter part of June. Against Yorkshire at Sheffield he again proved very effective, and in the match altpgether he was creditedwith eleven wickets for an average of under ten runs. His bowling, too, had much to do With the easy victory of Kent at Derby over Derbyshire, in whose second innings he took five wickets at a cost of 34 runs. Alec Hearne bowls right-hand slow round- arm. Though decidedly on the small side, he makes the most use of his height in bowling. His delivery, indeed, is high, and while he always requires careful watching, when the wicket helps at all he is very difficult. He breaks from leg, but frequently puts in a fast straight ball, which is occasionally very effec tive. He is a very steady bat, and, though lacking in hitting powers, his defence has often been of great use to the County. An excellent field anywhere, he has always proved and is likely to prove one of the most useful all-round cricketers in the Kent eleven. In our biography of Cropper, last Thursday, by a slip of the pen we made R. G. Barlow to bo a Derbyshire man by birth. He was bom at Long Fold, near Bolton, Lancashire. MITCHAM v. MR. HOBBS’ XI.
