The Sussex eleven were able to reverse the result of their previous meeting with Kent at Tonbridge on Saturday, winning the return match with 179 runs to spare. Though neither county had its full strength, some good cricket was shown on both sides. Tester batted finely in the first innings of Sussex. Going in first he was out last, having been at the wickets altogether four hours and five minutes. In proof of the vigour of his hitting it may be stated that his brilliant score of 130, the highest he has made for the county, con tained as many as twenty fours. Jesse Hide, who helped Tester to add (.H) for the third wicket, made 51, in which were ten fours. Lord Harris and Mr. Rashleigh made a capital commencement for Kent, scoring 91 in the first hour. Later on Mr. A. J. Thornton played with great care, and just at the last H. Hearne hit freely, helping to add 47 for the last wicket. The chief features of tho second innings of Sussex were the good hitting of Messrs. Thomas, of the Cambridge Eleven, who made his first appearance for Sussex in this mUch, and Blackman, who added 83 runs in an hour, and the stand of Phillips and Arunur Hide, who put on no loss than 65 for the last wicket. Kent went in a second time on Saturday, wanting i 00 to win. Heavy rain stopped play on the fall of the firstwicket, and as the ground dried under the influence of the sun, the batsmen were certainly placed at a disadvantage. George Hearne, who was in an hour and three-quarters for his 30, played carefully, but with the exception of Mr. Rashleigh, no one else got 20 and the innings closed for 126. Jesse Hide bowled with re markable success at the last. His six wickets only cost 39 runs. S u ssex . First Innings. Second Innings. Tester, b Wootton .........130 c A.J. Thornton, Quaife, b A.
