Cricket 1886
286 CEICKET t A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JULY 22,1886. eleven gained, as will be remembered, a very creditable victory, in the attainment of which Cropper, who scored 36 and 52 and took seven wickets for 09, played a very conspicuous part. Cropper is a good all-round cricketer. He bowls fasfcish left hand round-arm, and as his delivery is rather high and he gets some work on to the ball mostly from the off, he takes alot of watching, proving very effective when the ground helps at all. He bats right handed, and as he has very good defence, is at times a difficult wicket to get. In addition he is, too, an excellent field. Until this year, when he accepted an engagement with the Bolton Club, he has not been regularly attached to any club as professional. Cropper has also made a name as an Association footballer. The Sussex eleven, after being in a minority of 116 runs in this match begun at Brighton on Mondaj’, played up so pluckily that Surrey only won yesterday with three wickets to spare. The winners lost Mr. W. W. Read and Lohmann, who were playing for England at Lord’s, and Sussex, Mr. F. M. Lucas and Phillips. The latter had hurt his hand, and his place at the wicket was taken by G. Humphreys. Rain prevented a commence ment till past one o’clock on Monday, and then Mr. Shuter and Abel played siicli good cricket that 98 were got before the first Surrey wicket fell. Diver was caught at 130, but after this W. Humphreys’ lobs proved so effective that no one got more than fifteen, and the laso eight wickets only added 83. The wicket jdayed queerly on Tuesday mornin" when Sussex were in, and Beaumont and Bowley bowled with so much success that the innings was over for 97, of which W. Hum phreys contributed 37. When they went in again Messrs.McCormick,Newham, and Tester, andW. Humphreys played well, and yesterday Quaife rendered Mr. Newham such useful assistance for the eighth wicket that a total of 207 was reached before the innings closed. Though Surrey only wanted 92 to win, Walter Humphrej's’ underhand bowling was again of great use, and seven of tlic best batsmen were dismissed before the winning hit was made. S u r r e y . MIDLAND COUNTIES- The Yorkshire eleven had an easy victory in this matcl’ , commenced on Monday on the ground of theWarwicksh're Clu1),Birmingham, winning yesterday with ten wickets to spare. Spillman, of Middlesex, Gunn, Flowers, and Attewrell were in the eleven wrhich opposed the Yorkshiremen, but otherwise there was no one of great reputation. Bates was in great form, both with bat and ball. Indeed he was the hero of the match, scoring 119 out of 242, and taking eight w'ickets for 89 runs. Mr. E. Lumb, everj’one will be glad to see, re-appeared in the Yorkshire eleven, and with success. The match was for the benefit of T. K. Yeetch, who was at one time engaged at the Oval, and has for the last few years acted as professional to the Edgbaston Club. M idland C ounties . First Innings. Second Innings.
