Cricket 1886

280 CRICKET ;• A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JULY 15,1886. LANCASHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. After a very interesting and well-contested game the Lancashire eleven succeeded in beating Yorkshire, at Manchester on Saturday last, with four wickets to spare. Mr. Hornby’s strain of the previous week prevented him playing, and in his absence tho captaincy of the home eleven devolved on Mr. A. G. Steel. To the latter, too, in a very great measure was due the credit of Lancashire’s success, as was the case the week before with Surrey. In each innings his batting was of the most masterly character, and altogether he was credited with 135 for only once out without a mistake. Going in first wicket down he was last out in the first and not out in the second innings. In all 271 runs were scored from the bat, and of these he was responsible for just one half. To his batting, and the bowling of Barlow, the Lancashire eleven owed a very creditable victory. Barlow was again in fine form with the ball, taking twelve wickets for 111 runs. Ulyett hit in his best form in Yorkshire’s first innings, making 64 of the first 96 runs got. After his retirement, though, Barlow and Watson bowled with great effect, and the last seven wickets only added 27 runs. Going in a second time in a very bad light, Ulyett, Preston, Hall, and Bates were all out for 37. Later on, however, Mr. Hawke, Peel, and Lee were seen to great advantage, and Peel in particular showed good cricket. The veteran, Emmett, did a splendid bowling performance in Lancashire’s first innings. Ho bowled 32 overs for 33 runs and seven wickets. Robinson playedwell at the close, and his batting was in valuable at a time when the result was in doubt. Y o r k sh ir e . First Innings. Second Innings. G. SURREY v. LEICESTERSHIRE. The Leicestershire Eleven did a fine per formance at Leicester on Thursday and Faiday last, defeating a strong team of Surrey by ten wickets. The wicket was a very bad one, and Pougher, a bowler of the bumping order, proved too much for the Surrey bats men. Mr. Bowden in the first, and Mr. Key, Read, and Bowley in the second innings, were alone able to reach double figures, and Read’s second score of 29 was the highest on the side. Considering the excellent all-round cricket shown by Surrey this season, the easy victory of the home team, even making every allow ance for the state of the ground, was a great achievement, and one for which they deserve the highest praise. Pougher and Rylott were unchanged during the match, a very rare per formance in County cricket. The former’s figures were remarkable, 46 overs and a ball for 54 runs and 13 wickets. Not an extra, too, was given by Leicestershire. Warren’s 52 was a useful though lucky innings. Surrey’s first score of 26 is the smallest of the season in a County match. S u r r e y . First Innings.
