Cricket 1886

JULY 15,1886. CBICKET: A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAME. 271 SUSSEX v. KENT. After three days of interesting cricket Kent won this match, commenced at Brighton on Thursday last, with four wickets to spare. Sussex was unable to claim the services of Messrs. Brann and Newham, but on the other hand Kent had not its full strength. As is generally the case on the run-getting turf at Brighton, the batsmen showed to the best advantage, and in all 1,063 runs were totalled for thirty-six wickets. Though they won the toss the home team were not able to do much against the bowling of Wootton, who was in his very best form. Quaife and Humphreys put on 47 for the sixth wicket, but theirs was the only noteworthy stand of the innings. Wootton took eight of the ten wickets at a cost of 55 runs, a fine performance. When Kent went in Lord Harris, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Thornton, and three brothers Hearne all batted well. Lord Harris and George Hearne added 105 for the third wicket, and Alec Hcarne, the last batsman, lent Mr. Thornton such useful assistance that 84 were put on before the innings closed. Though no fewer than 58 behind, the Sussex eleven played up pluckily. Jesse Hide, Humphreys, Mr. Lucas, and Budgen were the principal scorers, the four contributing 305 of 352 from the bat. Hide’s 173 was an unusually fine display of free cricket with only one chance, a hard one when he had got 63. Among his hits were one 6, a straight drive out of the ground, and twenty- one 4’s. Kent had 213 to win, and chiefly through the good cricket of the two elder Hearnes and Mr. Thornton, these were got for the loss of six batsmen. Wootton’s bowling figures for Kent deserve special praise. He took in all fourteen Sussex wickets at an average of H i runs. S ussex . First Innings.
