Mr. J. A. Iliffe presided over a very large assembly of members and their friends, who heartily appre ciated the good fare in the shape of songs, glees, and instrumental items provided for their amusement. Mr. E. F. Turner was, as on former occasions, heartily welcomed, his original readings in which legal and cricket topicswere commingled creating intense amuse ment. His “ Over Thirty v. Under Thirty” was especially good. We regret, however, that out of respect to the owners of the names men tioned in it, we dare not run the risk of the consequences in giving it publicity. The “ Ode to a Blazer,” however, which occurred in it struck us as peculiarly pathetic, and with Mr. Turner’s Ipermission we are able to give our readers the benefit of it without fear of an action for infringement of copyright. ODE TO A BLAZER. The coat that braved in bygone years The battle and the breeze, When swiftest bowling had no fears For these old shins and knees. When forty strokes a minute I Could row and think it fun, And, after eating one steak pie, Consume another one. When I did, on the cinder track, My supple limbs disport, At football play three-quarter back, And count a kick as naught. When I could turn night into day, And mix my liquors to o ; Ah I m e! I’ll put this coat away It makes me feel so blue. Farewell old Blazer! I and you Have had our little fling; Old things perforce give way to new As winter yields to spring. CHESHIRE COUNTY CLUB. May 31, June 1. Leicester, Cheshire v. Leicester shire June 10,11,12. Stockport, Cheshire v. Yorkshire July 15,16,17. Halifax, Cheshire v. Yorkshire Aug. 2, 3. Old Trafford, Cheshire v. Lancashire Aug. 11.12. Lord’s, Cheshire v. M.C.C. & G. Aug. 13,14. Stockport, Cheshire v. Leicestershire Aug. 20, 21. Stockport, Cheshire v. Lancashire Aug. 30, 31. Birmingham, Cheshire v. Warwick shire An E ssex A ssociation .— An association of the Essex local clubs for the promotion of a cricket challenge cup competition has been formed with the approval of the Essex County Club. The County Club promises five guineas towards the Challenge Cup, and offers the use of the new County ground at Leyton for the final tie in the competition. Mr. C. E. Green writes that the movement has his most hearty good wishes, as he recognises that the more stimulus there is given to cricket throughout the county, in all the villages and towns, the better chance there is of really good recruits coming forward for the County eleven. If the proposed club cup competition were properly organised and carried out he fully expected that it would be the means of very greatly strengthening the position of the County club and of popularising cricket as a game through out Essex. A committee has been appointed to draft bye-laws and rules, and it has been decided to start the cup competition this year provided not less than twelve clubs enter. Eight or nine clubs have signified their willing ness to compete. T he Melbourne Cricket Club tendered a complimentary supper to Mr. Frank Grey Smith, their vice-president, in the pavilion on Jan. 26, on the occasion of that gentleman’s early departure for England. There was a large attendance. Mr. F. G. Moule occupied the chair, on his left was the guest of the evening, Mr. F. G. Smith, and Mr. J. C. Stewart, Mayor of Melbourne. On the right of the chair was the Hon. Ivo Bligh. After the usual loyal toasts, the Mayor of Melbourne proposed the health of Mr. F. G. Smith. He spoke in high terms of the services which that gentleman had rendered to the club. Mr. Smith had joined the club in 1851, and had resided in the colony since 1839. Mr. H. C. A. Harrison, vice-president of the Melbourne Football Club, presented Mr. Smith with a handsome album containing portraits of some old members of the club. Mr. Smith suitably responded, and warmly thanked the members for the manner in which they had received the toast of his health. The other toasts were— Success to Cricket, Kindred Sports, and Our Visitors, responded to by the Hon. Ivo Bligh. H am C r ic k e t C lu b . — The annual general meeting of this Surrey club was held at head quarters, the New Inn, Ham Common, on the 15th inst. The report and accounts were pre sented, showing a favourable balance on the right side, and were adopted. Messrs. W. A. Ettridge and G. Hughes were appointed to audit them. Mr. H. G. Coxhead was unanimously re-elected president, and the Rev. T. G. P. Hough (the Vicar of Ham) and Mr. Freake Field were elected vice-presidents. Mr. C. H. W. Figg was chosen captain, Mr. C. Fenley vice-captain, Mr. H. Bradshaw treasurer, and Mr. J. Johnson, jun., secretary. Mr. Johnson (who had been forbidden, under medical advice, to resume any official duties from the present time) kindly consented, at the express wish of the members, to retain office until the end of the cricketing season, 30th September next. A hearty vote of thanks was given to him for his kindness. The committee ap pointed were—Messrs. F. Field, HughWithall, W. Brockwell, W. A. Ettridge, and H. J. Et tridge. Mr. J. Hall was re-elected umpire for the season. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the proceedings. The annual concert, given on the 2nd inst., was a great success, and the proceeds will be the means of adding a gooa sum to the funds of the club. T H E PU B L IC SCHOOLS- F ix t u r e s fo r 1880.
