Cricket 1886

256 CBICKET: A WEEKLY BECOED OF THE GAME. JULY 8,1886. NOTTS v. YOBKSHIRE. The matches between Notts and Yorkshire are usually productive of keen and interesting contests. Nor was that finished on the Trent Bridge Ground, at Nottingham, on Saturday, an exception to the general rule. On the con trary the game was very even throughout, and after three days’ excellent cricket Notts, who were without Barnes, were able to pull through after a most exciting finish with only eight runsto spare. The bowlers from the outsetwere seen to great advantage, and on the first day nineteen wickets fell for an aggregate of 216 runs. When Notts went in a second time with 20 runs in hand Gunn and Scotton made a determined stand for the second wicket, both batsmen playing capital cricket. After the fomier’s dismissal at 90, though, there was a great collapse, and the last eight wickets only added 59 runs. The ground helped the bowlers, but still it was a good performance of Emmett andWade, who equally divided the ten wickets of Notts. The latter, a new player in the eleven this year, who bowls medium E ace round, was the more successful, his ve wickets costing only 30 runs. With 170 to win Yorkshire made an excellent start, Hall and Ulyett scoring 66 for the first wicket. Hall was in two hours and three quarters, but with the exception of Preston no one else offered serious resistance until Beate joined Wade on the fall of the eighth wicket. Though 36 were still wanted to win the latter hit so freely that runs came quickly, and only 11 were still required when Peate ran himself out. Hunter, the last man, after acouple was very finely caught—arunning catch by Wright at long-on—and Yorkshire thus lost a most exciting match by eight runs. The out-cricket of the Notts eleven was ex ceedingly good at the close, and their victory was a highly creditable one. N o tts . First Innings. Second Innings.
