After avery good game on the first hands York shire succeeded yesterday in defeating Cam bridge University in this match, begun at Shef field on Monday, by seven wickets. Ulyett and Lee were representing the Players against the Australians, and their places were taken by Wade and Ambler. The chief feature of the first day’s cricket was the brilliant batting of Mr. G. Kemp for the University. Going in first wicket down with the total at 22 , he was fifth out at 167, having contributed 103 of 145 got during his stay in two hours and forty minutes. With the exception of a hard chance to square leg when he had reached sixty- eight his play was faultless. This is the third hundred he has made in succession against Yorkshire bowling—a curious coincidence. In spite of a creditable score of 66 by Peel seven Yorkshire wickets were down for 146, and 59 were wanted to save the follow. Some vigorous hitting by Preston, and at the last by Peate, who helped to add 64 runs for the tenth wicket, however, altered the aspect of the game altogether, and on the completion of an innings the county were only three runs to the bad. Peate had t« o lives, but Preston only gave one chance, when he had got 76, and his runs were made by fine free cricket. Though on Tuesday night Cambridge had made 65 for two wickets yesterday morning a collapse tookplace, and the inningswas brought to a close in forty-five minutes for an addition of only 21 runs, Peate and Bates, helped by the ground, bo vled with great success, the former taking five wickets for only nine O. With only 90 to win, Yorkshire started badly, Mr. Rock with the first two balls deli vered bowling Mr. Hawke and Bates. Preston, as in the first innings, though, batted in the most spirited style. In spite of several changes he scored fast and, indeed, he made 71 of the 90 runs got, carrying out his bat after another fine display of batting. In the match he obtained 150 runs without being once out, an achievement of quite exceptional merit. C ambridge U n iversity . First Innings. Mr. H. W. Bainbridge, c and b Emmett ......... 34 Mr. C.
