Cricket 1886
34 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. MARCH 25,1886. form he was creditedwith foursuccessive double figures against Notts, and his aggregate in the two matches with Notts amounted to ninety- nine for four innings. Later still after the season proper was closed he played as a sub stitute for Shaw’s Australian Eleven at Harro gate, and with fair success, showing good cricket for his second score of seventeen. His bowling, too, on several occasions was of great use to the county in 1885. The match for Platt’s benefit, at Derby, when the Yorkshire- msn had such a narrow escape of a defeat, has already been mentioned as the occasion of one of Chatterton’s best performances with the bat. It was, indeed, his day altogether, and his bowling was in addition very effective, showing in the second innings of Yorkshire thirty overs for twenty-nine runs and four wickets. Chatterton has a very pretty style of batting with good defence and at the same time hit ting powers above the average. He is particu larly good on the off-side, and his cutting and driving are at times very clean and effective. He bowls slow round with a rather high de livery and a break from the off. Though he cannot be regarded as a first-class slow bowler, on occasions he is very useful, especially when the wicket helps him. He is moreover an excellent field, and the Committee of the Marylebone Club have shown a proper appreciation of one of the most prom ising all-round cricketers of last year, in secu ring his services as one of the ground bowlers of 1886 at Lord’s. As a footballer Chatterton has also made his mark. Indeed, he has figured in both the Rugby and Association games with equal credit. A keen cricketer, and civil and well- conducted fellow withal, Chattercon’s advance ment in his profession will be a matter of gratification to the cricket public generally T H E C R IC K E T SEA SON OF 1 S 86 . As several alterations have been made in the match list, arranged at Lord’s on Dec. 8, consequent on the subsequent decision of the Melbourne Club to send a team to England, we give a corrected programme. The match between Notts and Lancashire fixed for July 19, and those between Yorkshire and Derby shire and Gloucestershire and Notts on August 12, have all been moved so as to prevent inter ference with the matches belween England and Australia.
