Cricket 1886
206 CBICKET: A VEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. JUNE 17,1886, E L E V E N OF NORTH v. E L E V E N OF SOUTH. Of late years the W hit Monday match at Lord’s has lost most of the attractions it used to possess.. County fixtures since the institu tion of Bank Holidays have becom e so plentiful that m ost of the chief players are always engaged, and it is only possible to secure very moderate elevens for the London holiday folk. This year Notts, Surrey, Yorkshire, Kent, Lancashire, and Sussex were all playing, and as in addition the match between Mr. C. I. Thornton’s E leven and Cambridge University took several prom inent amateurs, the talent at L ord ’s was not of the highest class. Still some very fair cricket was shown during the game, and in some respects the play presented remarkable features. The incident of tho first day was the stand made by W hite and Parnham, who had nine bowlers against them, for the last wicket of the North. Parnham, the Leicestershire bowler, had before shown him self to be only a moderate batsman. On this occasion, though, he played with great freedom, and during his partnership with W hite 157 runs were got in five minutes under the two hours. White, a Nottinghamshire professional, batted in good style and well for his 62, and also kept wicket creditably. Tho m ost noteworthy cricket for the South was the excellent batting of the young Surrey professional, Henderson. For the last two years owing to ill-health he has been unable to play, and everyone w ill be pleased to see that he has not lost the excellent form he showed in 1883. In the tw o innings he made 98 runs, the highest aggregate on the side. The North won by nine wickets. N orth . First Innings.
