Cricket 1886

2 0 2 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THI2 GAME. JUNE 17,1886, SU R R E Y v. E SS EX . The Essex Eleven, who were again without the services of Mr. C. D. Buxton, did not show to the same advantage in the return, played at the Oval on Thursday and Friday last, as in the first match at Leyton. Owing to rain, the game was not opened till nearly half-past three o ’clock on Thursday, and Surrey, who batted on an easy wicket, were cheaply got rid o f for 197. The best batting was shown by Abel and Jones. The former, who went in first, was ninth out, and though let off twice at the wicket, his sixty-three was a capital display of steady crickct. Jones batted with considerable freedom. Essex, who went in j ust after noon n the second day, were dism issedtwice by half past four o’clock for an aggregate of only 103. In the first innings nine wickets were down for 16, and Mr. Bishop, the last batsman, was the only one to reach double figures. Lohm ann, who took six wickets at a cost of only fourteen runs, was not put on when Essex went in a second time, and W ood, the wicket-keeper, also had a rest, giving up the gloves to Mr. Bowden. Messrs. Owen and W ard made a good start against the bowling of Jones and Abel, but when Beaumont and Bowley came on no stand was made, and the tenth wicket fell at 70. Beaum ont’s bowling was remark ably successful. He took ten wickets at a cost of only 36 runs. Surrey won by an innings and 94 runs. S u r r e y . M.
