Sussex put a very strong eleven into the field at Brighton on Monday last for this match, the proceeds of which are to be given to Henry Phillips, the worthy professional who has kept wicket for the County for the last eighteen years. Unfortunately, Glouces tershire was not so well represented, and in the absence of Woof, and Messrs. Page, Brain, and Townsend, the team was indeed an inferior one. Under the circumstances, it was hardly a surprise that the home eleven were able to claim the best of the game throughout. Thanks, chiefly, to Bean, Humphreys, and Messrs. Newham and Lucas, Sussex had alead of 202 runs on the first hands, the two pro fessionals, while they were together, adding 116 for the seventh wicket. Their stand was the best feature of the Sussex batting. Bean played with great freedom, and though his innings was in the latter part not free from mistakes, it was a remarkably good perform ance, confirming the reputation he has gained this season as an all-round cricketer. Though they went in a second time with heavy arrears against them, the Gloucestershire eleven played up pluckily, and Messrs. Grace, Francis, and Hale, the young amateur who made his debut , all showed good cricket. Mr. Grace, as usual, was the mainstay of the side both with bat and ball. In the two innings he scored 108, besides taking five of the ten Sussex wickets for 94 runs. Lord Sheffield has headed Phillips’ subscription list with a handsome donation of £100. G loucestershire .
