Cricket 1886

172 CJBICiKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JUNE 8, 1886. SURREY v. MIDDLESEX. The Surrey eleven scored their fifth consecu tive victory of the season at the Oval on Friday last, when they beat a fairly strong eleven of Middlesex by an innings and thirty- three runs. Mr. A. J. Webbe, owing to the recent death of his brother, was unable to play, and Mr. Vernon acted as Captain of the Mid dlesex eleven for the occasion. Three players new to County cricket represented Middlesex for the first time—Mr. J. G. Walker, the old Oxonian, just qualified by residence; Mr. G. W. Hillyard, who showed promising form with both bat and ball in the recent Colts’ match; and Spillman, who has been well known for several years in connection with London and suburban cricket. Rain fell heavily during the early part of Thursday, but it cleared up in time to allow of a commencement before half-past twelve o’clock. Though the ground was slow at the start, Surrey, who went in first, mainly through the stand of the Beads, who put on 102 runs for the fourth wicket, fared well, and were able to realise 215 runs before the innings came to a close. When Middlesex went in Lohmann’s bowling proved very effec tive, and no one but Messrs. Scott, Vernon, and Leslie got double figures. The feature of the innings was the capital cricket of Mr. Scott. He went in first wicket down with the score at three and carried out his bat. He was the only batsman who met the bowling with confidence, and his play under the cir cumstances was of exceptional merit. Loh mann took eight of the ten wickets, and of these seven were clean bowled, a highly creditable performance. When Middlesexwent in again on Friday afternoon the wicket was certainly more in favour of run-getting than ftgainst it. Mr. Walker, Mr. Hadow, and Spillman, though, alone made any stay, and these three were responsible for 70 out of 89 from the bat. In proof of the accuracy of the Surrey bowlers it may be added that of the twenty Middlesex wickets as many as fifteen were clean bowled. S u r r e y .
