3,1666. CRICKET: A "WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 167 YORKSHIRE v. SUSSEX. Thursday last was the day fixed for the com mencement of the first match of the season between these counties, at Huddersfield. Heavy rain, though, prevented a start until nearly four o’clock on the following afternoon, and the short space of time then remaining for play was curtailed by the downpour on Satur day. Under the circumstances it could hardly be surprising to find the bowlers generally masters of the situation. Lee played capital cricket in the first hands, and it was mainly due to his batting in conjunction with Peate’s effective bowling that the home team were able to claim an advantage of 47 on the com pletion of an innings. The wicket was very difficult when the Sussex Eleven were batting, and Peate was remarkably successful, taking six wickets for only 15 runs. Rain caused the ground to play easier during the second innings of Yorkshire, and Hall and Bates showed capital cricket in very different styles. Bates hit with his accustomed vigour, and while he was in 63 of 89 runs got came from his bat. On the other hand Hall’s defence was as effec tive as ever. Going in first he carried out his bat for 50 out of 173, having been altogether four hours at the wickets. Though he should have been caught at mid-on when he had made 41 he made no other mistake, and his performance under the special circumstances was one of singular merit. Forty minutes were left for play when Sussex went in for their second innings, and during this time they lost four good wickets for 22 runs. At the finish they were 198 runs behind with six wickets to fall, so that their chances were apparently hopeless. In the match Peate took nine wickets at a cost of only 21 runs—a re markable achievement. Emmett and he bowled for Yorkshire unchanged. Y orkshire . First Innings. Second Innings.
