Rain acted very prejudicially on the first match of the season between these counties, fixed for Thursday last and two following days at Manchester. Owing to a continuous down pour no play was possible on the first day, and as the wicket driea on the second the batsmen wrere mostly seen at a disadvantage. The ex ception was Mr. Hornby, who made 52 out of 78 while in. Though he gave two hard chances, his hitting wras very clean, and he certainly played quite the right game as the ground was. The merit of his performance can be judged from the fact that during the day. twenty-two wickets fell for .156, of which Mr. Hornby contributed just one-third. Wat son’s bowling was the one other feature of the day’s cricket. He was credited with seven of the ten Derbyshire wickets at a cost of only fifteen runs. Rain again interfered with the play on Saturday, and the game had to be abandoned as a draw soon after four o’clock. It did not, however, prevent the display of some excellent cricket by F. Sugg and Cropper. These two batsmen put on fifty runs while they were together, and their stand was one of the best features of the match. Mr. A. Teggin, a slow bowler from Longsight, and A. Smith, of Werneth, wrho played once for the county of his birth (Notts) a few years ago against Surrey, made their first appearance for Lancashire in this match. Derbyshire suffered severely from the loss of Chatterton, who wras unable to play owing to an injured hand. Several other well-known ‘ players, though, were absent on both sides. The game was drawn, Derbyshire being 23 runs on with five wickets to fall. D erbysh ire . First Innings. Mr. E. A. J. Maynard, b Watson ........., ... 1 W. Cropper, b Watson ... 0 Mr. W. S.
