Cricket 1886
MAY 27,1886. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 147 M.C.C. & GROUND v. SUSSEX. The Marylebone Club suffered another defeat in this match, played at Lord’s on Thursday and Friday last. The Marylebone eleven was a powerful one, including Messrs. Grace and Hornby, in addition to a strong combination of professionals. On the other hand Sussex had not its strength, in the absence of Messrs. F. M. Lucas, Newham and Whitfeld, and a trial was given to two youngsters who had shown promising form in the Colts’ match, Budgen and Clark, the latter a left-hand bowler of medium pace. Going in first Sussex had the best of the ground, which had suffered materially from the heavy rains. Thanks to the fine cricket of Mr. Ellis, who con tributed 58 of 115 from the bat, the County team were able to claim an advantage of 55 runs on the first hands, alead which was invalu able to them as the wicket was on the second day. The ground, indeed, was quite unplayable on Friday, and seventeen wickets only realised an aggregate of 87 runs. The second innings of M.C.C. was remarkable. Not one of the eleven succeeded in reaching double figures, and Mr. Lancashire was the highest contributor to the total of 44. It was a bowlers’ match throughout, and the figures of Wootton for M.C.C., and the brothers Hide for Sussex, were specially noteworthy. Wootton took twelve of the County’s wickets at a cost of 62 runs, Jesse Hide the same number of M.C.C. for two runs less. Arthur Hide’s} six wiokets were obtained at an expense of 15 runs. Sussex won by 59 runs. S ussex . First Innings. Second Innings.
