Cricket 1886

140 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. MAT 20,1886. MARYLEBONE CLUB AND GROUND v. DERBYSHIRE. The Derbyshire County Club opened its season auspiciously with a victory over a fairly strong eleven of M.C.C. and Ground at Lord’s on Saturday last. Owing to heavy rain no play was possible on the first day, and as a consequence of the heavy downpour earlier in the week, the wicket was in a condition al together unfavourable to a display of good cricket. Under the circumstances, therefore, the highest praise should be awarded to a really exceptional performance by W. Chatter ton. He wras batting for two hours and three- quarters on a very difficult wicket, and taking into account that his runs were got against bowlers like Wootton, Rylott, and Attewell, all of them particularly effective under such conditions, his batting cannot be overrated. He might have been stumped soon after his arrival, but until just before he was out he gave no other chance. His play last year was of the highest promise, and every one will be pleased that he has opened the season so successfully. In addition he took three wickets for 27 runs. Mr. Walker’s bowling, too, con tributed in no small degree to the victory of the County. In the two innings of M.C.C. he took ten wickets for 37 runs—exceptional figures, making every allowance for the help he received from the ground. Davidson, a fast round-arm bowler, made a promising debut for the county. His analysis showed 109 balls for 37 runs and 5 wickets. Derby shire won by an innings and 28 runs. M.C.C. and G round .
