A little over a day-and-a-half of actual play sufficed for the first match of the season between these Counties, played at the Oval on Monday and Tuesday. Rain prevented a com mencement until past one o’clock on the first day, and the match was over by half-past four on the following afternoon. Hampshire was not well represented, and although they won the toss the eleven made such a poor use of their opportunities that they were dismissed for sixty-nine in each innings, Mr. Powell alone getting into double figures in both hands. Messrs. Read and Roller were the chief scorers for Surrey. The latter’s 34 was the betterper formance, and every one will be glad to see him open the season so well after a rather severe illness. Lohmann’s bowling wras the best of the match. Altogether he took seven Hampshire wickets at a cost of 31 runs. Surrey won by an innings and 50 runs. H am pshire . First Innings. Mr. L. G.
