The Marylebone Club opened its hundredth season witn the above match at Lord’s on Thursday last. The youngsters were opposed by a strong side both in batting and bowling, and, as was only to be expected, were beaten at all points. The bowling of Flowers and Woot- ton, in particular, proved detrimental to the Colts’ chances, and four of them failed to get a run in either innings. Mr. Hillyard showed to great advantage in batting and bowling, and his all-round cricket was of distinct promise. His second score of 21 waSithoroughlywell-got. His bowling (fast right) proved very effective, showing four wickets in 24 overs, 15 maidens, at a cost of only 20 runs. Dunkley (left hand fast) was the most successful of the other bowlers on the side of the Eighteen. For M.C.C. the principal scorers were Messrs. Vernon, Hornby, A. J. Webbe, Russel and Studd. Flowers and Wootton, as already stated, were remarkably successful with the ball. Each of them took seventeen wickets, though Wootton’s were got at a lesserexpense, costing54 against 71 of Flowers. M.C.C. and G. won by 180 runs. Score and analysis:— M.C.C. and G round . First Innings. Mr. E.J.C.Studd.bDunkley 13 Mr. A. J. Webbe, b Louis 13 Mr. G. F. ESHER v. BROADWATER. "£Five of the Australian team, Messrs. Scott, Bruce, M’llwraith, Garrett and Trumble, re presented Broadwater in this match, played at Esher on Saturday last. The Esher team on the other hand was a very strong one, particu larly in batting, including Messrs. I. D. Walker, A. J. Webbe, G. B. Studd, Kemp, E. M. Hadow, Cottrell, and the brothers Clarke. As a con sequence some fine cricket was shown, though the game went in favour of Broadwater, who won on the first innings by 121 runs. With the exception of Mr. M’llwraith the Australians all got double figures, though in most cases their runs were not got without mistakes. Mr. Thornton, who ought to have been caught early in his innings, hit well. His 84 included three 6’s (out of the ground), one 5, three 4’s, and five 3’s. For Broadwater Mr.Garrett’s bowl ing was very effective. His 7 wickets only cost 59 runs. On the other side Mr. Webbe was the most successful bowler. He took 5 wickets for 76 runs. Scores:— C. I.
