MAY G, 1886. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. SURREY COLTS v. CLAPHAM WAN DERERS. Ten Surrey Colts, with Diver as captain, met the Clapham Wanderers, better known as the ClaphamClub,ai theOval onTuesday. The result was an interesting game won by theWanderers on the first innings by 35 runs. Their success was mainly due to the stand made by Messrs. H. Y. Bate and F. Furner. These two batsmen put on 110 runs for the fifth wicket. Harrison, who hit hard, was the highest scorer on the side of the Colts. The best cricket, though, was that of Brockwell, a youngster who seems likely to shape into a useful batsman. C la ph a m W a n d e r e rs . First Innings. B. Burton, b Terry 35 R. Another of the trial matches organised by the Surrey County Club was played at Ken- nington Oval yesterday. Diver, who captained the Surrey Colts, lost the toss, and the Hospital team were not dismissed till after luncheon, Scott, Mitchell, Colclough, and Clarke being the chief contributors to their total of 192. When the Colts went in Brockwell again showed good cricket for his runs, as did Walbourn. The feature of the innings, though, was the excellent display of Diver, who got 103—his second innings of three figures already this season. It was entirely through him that the Colts were able to claim a victory by 35 runs on the first innings. J. D. Cruick shank took seven of the Colts’ wickets at a cost of 78 runs. He also showed up well at the close, putting on with Thompson in the second innings 68 runs without the loss of a wicket. Brockwell was also the most successful bowler for the Colts, getting five of ten wickets for 56 runs. G u y ’ s H o spita l . W. J. Scott, c Nutt, b Walboum ..........47 J. D. T he Annual Dinner of the Incogniti C.C. took place on Monday night at the Criterion, and was exceptionally well attended. This was chiefly owing to the fact that Mr. W. J. Ford was announced to take the chair, and that many of his old cricketing friends were anxious to take the opportunity of bidding him farewell. Amongst those present we noticed Messrs. A. W. L. Hemming (Hon. Sec.), G. F. Fraser (Hon. Treasurer), P. Hilton, Col. S. Buchanan, C. E. Horner, J. Robertson, E. A. Parke, E. C. Friend,T. Micklem,H. K. Avory, W. B. Friend, M. P. Betts, H. J. Hill, C. Awdry, W. Bird, T. Spreckley, A. Anderson, &c., whilst amongst the visitors were Messrs. A. S. Francis, General Heywood, F. J. Ford, R. E. Yerburgh, F. Robertson, Col. Robertson, E\ F. Pratt, &c. The chairman having pro posed the toasts of the Queen, Royal Family, and the Services, gave in most felicitous terms the toast of “ Success to the Incogniti C.C.” He referred to the continued success of the Club last season, and while regretting that he should himself be severed from the old Club for some years wished it all prosperity. The toast was drunk with all honours, and replied to by the Hon. Sec. Mr. Hemming then gave the toast of “ The Chairman,” and this was to most present certainly the toast of the evening. He expressed the regret of all members of the Incogs, at Mr. Ford’s departure next Saturday for New Zealand, and concluded a most happy speech with every good wish to him while away and speedy return to his old cricketing comrades. Mr. Ford, on rising to reply, received an ovation which he is not likely to forget in his far-off home. He thanked all present in a few well- chosen sentences for their kind wishes and hoped that there would be a “ hit ” left in him on his return. The “ Visitors ” and “ County Cricket ” brought to a close the list of toasts, which had been liberally interspersed with some excellent singing. M r . “ B ob ” C rook (of the Lower Clapton C.C.) now in Brisbane, scored 35 out of 76 re cently in capital style for a local club. GRANVILLE (LEE) v. HORNSEY. Played at Hornsey on May 1.
