Cricket 1885

APRIL 23, 1885. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 71 end of the year amounted to £ 4 ,739 6 s. 6 d, Of this your Committee have invested £3,000 in Government securities ; and it will be their endeavour to increase this amount to meet unforeseen emergencies. Your Committee have to report that they are making further improvements for the comfort and convenience of the increased number of members, as well as of the general public. A new covered stand in the place of the wooden structure to the east of the pavilion, to correspond with the covered stand on the west side, is in course of erection. A large portion of these two stands will be reserved for the members and their friends. The banks on the eastern side of the ground have been permanently strengthened by brickwork, and each tier gravelled. They will provide substantial accommodation for a large number of spectators, and, it is hoped, be appreciated by visitors to the ground. Your Committee having decided that the time has arrived for raising the sub scription of new members—that of the old members, and those nominated to be ballotted for before the general meeting, to remain the same as heretofore—desire to place the matter before the members at a Special General Meeting for their decision. W ith this view, a Special General Meeting will be held in the Pavilion before the General Meeting at 4.30, when the following alterations in the rules will be brought forward for discussion. Rule V II.—To be altered as follows : “ That the annual subscription of members elected previous to the General Meeting o f 1885 be one guinea and two pounds; the former sum entitles a member to every privilege except that of practice on the ground, and the latter sum entitles a member to every privilege the Club affords. But the annual subscription for all members elected after the General Meeting of 1885 be two guineas with an entrance fee of one guinea.” Rule X .—\For words “ exhibited in the pavilion for ” substitute “ handed in to the Secretary at least.” Rule X I.—For “ eight ” substitute “ five.” Rule X V - “ five.” -For “ three ” substitute Add new Rule “ The Trustees of the Club shall be the Right Hon. Lord Monson, the Right Hon. the Earl of Bessborougli, and Wildman Cattley, Esq., who shall have the power of investing the funds of the Club (on receiving the instructions of the Com mittee) in Government Securities; in cases of death or resignation, the Com mittee to appoint a new Trustee or Trustees,” By virtue of the powers vested in them by R u leX IV ., your Committee will report at the Annual Meeting that the privilege of members admitting a friend into the Pavilion will be suspended as usual in the Gentlemen v. Players’ match. It is in the interest of members and for their comfort that this resolution should be strictly enforced. In accordance with Rule III. the fol lowing members of your Committee retire by rotation and are eligible for re-election:— Sir R. Hanson, J. W . Hobbs. Maj.-Gen. Marshall, M. W . Marshall, J. B. Oakley, Hubert Scott, C. A. Stein, and G. Wells. Messrs. C. C. Clarke and II. C. Clarke having resigned their places on your Committee, your Committee, in accordance with Rule X V II., have elected Messrs. G. C. Morrison and J. S. Balfour, M.P. for their term o f office. The Annual General Meeting for the election of officers and for the transaction of other business will be held in the Pavilion, at the Oval, on Thursday, May 7, at 5.30 p.m. Your Committee are of opinion that it is not advisable to have a dinner this year.
