VO CRICKE5T; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME, a p r i l 23 , ms. LEICESTERSHIRE COUNTY v. FIFTEEN COLTS. This, the third of the series of trial matches between the county team and district players, promoted by the committee of the county club, was played at the county ground on Monday last. The colts, who were selected from the Lutterworth and Hinckley Districts, were considered a fairly strong team. Although the game was begun at ten minutes to 12, the Fifteen, who were the first to bat, were not disposed of till luncheon. Davis and Seddons displayed excellent defence, particularly the last- named, who played a fine innings. G. L. Ramsey, after getting settled, exhibited very good form, compiling 28 runs without giving a single chance. During the first part of the morning Rylott was severely punished, but later in the day eight overs delivered by him secured five wickets. The bowling of the colts was only moderate, but the fielding all round was smart. Whittle played a merry innings for his runs, but K. H. Pearce, who made his first appearance for his county, exercised a considerable amount of patience and judgment for his valuable contribution ot 29. The colts’ total was passed for the los3 of seven wickets, the county winning by 26 runs. F ifteen C olts . LANCASHIRE COUNTY CLUB. The following is a copy of the Annual Report issued by the Committee for dis tribution among the members of the above C lub:— Your Committee are gratified in being able to report that the prosperous position of the Club has been fully maintained during the last twelve months. During the summer some excellent all round cricket was shown by the Comity Eleven, and on the whole, the play was satisfactory. Two very promising pro fessionals were introduced into the Eleven in W ood and Lohmann, and it is hoped that both will be of permanent value to Surrey. The bowling is still susceptible of improvement, but your Committee are not without hopes that the season of 1885 will see the Eleven strengthened in this department. No effort will be spared to find young professionals likely to be of use to the County. In all, twenty-four fixtures wero arranged for the Surrey Eleven in 1884. Of these, thirteen were won, 5 drawn, and 6 lost. The matches with the Australians, Oxford University, Lancashire, and Middlesex, at the Oval, and the oat matches with Notts and Kent were lost, while the County was victorious over Sussex, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Hampshire, tw ice; Gloucestershire, Mid dlesex, Lancashire, Cambridge Univer sity, and Essex once. Any notice of last year’s performances would be incomplete without a prominent mention of the help rendered by Mr. C. E. Horner. His bowling was invaluable throughout, and the thanks of all interested in Surrey Cricket are specially due to him. The enlargement of the match list to allow of the introduction of fixtures with Counties of recent growth has proved so successful in improving the cricket of the Eleven that your C®mmittee have deter mined on increasing the programme. They have, therefore, arranged home and home matches with Derbyshire, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Lanca shire, Leicestershire, Middlesex, Notts, Oxford University, Sussex, Somersetshire, and Yorkshire. The usual fixtures between Stirrey and Cambridge Univer sity and Gentlemen and Players will also be decided at the Oval. In addition, the revival of the once popular match between Gentlemen of the South and Players of the South will, it is hoped, give a fresh impetus to professional cricket in the Southern Counties, which has been show ing a slight advance during the last few years. In recognition of the valuable services rendered by Richard Humphrey, your Committee have determined to give him the proceeds of a match between North and South at the Oval on June 25th and two following days. They feel confident that the members will show their apprecia tion of the good work Humphrey did for Surrey cricket in the past. The finances of the Club are in a very satisfactory condition. Despite a large expenditure for works on and improve ments to the ground, the balance at the
