Cricket 1885
450 ORIOKET ; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. nov . s «, ms. Chester was the highest of the county season, but this was not his only notable performance, and among other good scores prominent mention may be made of his sixty-five against Oxford University at Oxford, a score which did much to decide the game in favour of his side. This last summer, too, Mr. Lancashire batted con sistently well. With the exception of Barlow he played in more innings than any other Lancashire batsman of the year, and for twenty-nine innings he had a very creditable average of close on eighteen runs. Mr. Lancashire, though his want of stature does not give him the same advantages as batsmen of more inches, bats in a very neat style. His driving is clean, and as he can hit hard when set scores fast. He is, too, a very good field and a safe catch. As a football player he has also made a name, though he has, we believe, now given up active participation iu the winter game. He represented Cambridge under Association Rules, and was above the average of half backs at the time he was at the University. Mr. Lancashire is a very keen cricketer in every way, and his selection to captain the County Eleven on several occasions in Mr. Hornby’s absence is only a fitting com pliment to one who has devoted so much time and energy to the service of Lancashire cricket. It is said that on Mr. Hornby’s retirement from the command of the team, which he has stated himself to be an event of the very near future, Mr. Lancashire will be his successor. The next No. of C rick et, on Dec. 24, will contain a portrait and biography of R . Thoms (the well-known um pire). STREATHAM CLUB. Matches won 12, lost 9, drawn 6. BESULTS OF MATCHES. May 16—v.
