Cricket 1885
s e p t . 3, 1885. CRICKET; A W EEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 333 SURREY v. YORKSHIRE. The county crieket season in London was brought to a successful conclusion at the Oval on Saturday, when Yorkshire beat Surrey after a most exciting finish by three wickets twenty minutes before time. The match itself had such an important bearing on the positions of several of the leading counties for the year that the result was awaited with extreme interest. Unfortu nately Surrey had not its full strength, Mr. W . E. Roller and Wood being both absent, while Mr. Key was still lame from his recent accident, and, owing to lack of practice, was not able to show to the best advantage. Surrey won the toss and decided to go in after the heavy rain of the morning, though, as it proved, they did not benefit as much by the toss as might have been expected. When play began soon after one o’clock Mr. Shuter and Abel did a fine performance. Both played in free style, and the first wicket did not fall until the score was 125,when Mr.Shuter played one of Peate’s on. He was missed at long on when he had made 22, but his hitting all round was very fine, and as the wicket was he played quite the right game. Among his hits was one from Peate on to the roof of the p ivilion. Abel retired third wicket down at 133, having, despite one chance, when he had scored four, played fine cricket. The wickot, as the innings advanced, began to play treacherously, and the last nine wickets only added 52 to the Surrey total, Ulyett, who had not bowled for Yorkshire since his accident last June, proving very effective towards the finish, as bis figures will show. The high wind during the night had dried the wicket by the second morning, and Yorkshire were able to head their opponents by 81 runs, Lee playing the I best cricket on the side for 48. When they went in again Surrey played up well, seven of the eleven getting double figures. The chief feature of the innings, though, was the brilliant batting of Mr. Diver. He has never been seen to letter advantage, and, consider ing the state oE the game, his 53 was an innings of exceptional merit. His figures consisted of one five—four for an overthrow — Sen fours, one two, and six singles. York shire had 122 to get to win, and with three hours left there was little doubt of their ability to get them, particularly as the wicket was playing very well at the finish. The Surrey eleven, though, bowled and fielded up so well that runs came very slowly, and with Hall, Grimshaw, Ulyett, and Bates all out at 48, the game began to grow exciting. Lee, who again played admirable cricket, and Peel put on 29, but Surrey again looked up, and when Lee fell —the seventh wicket—at 98, the success of the Yorkshiremen was again doubtful. Up to the last the Surrey men played up most pluckily, but Emmett and the youngster Preston batted with great judgment, and it was to their nerve at the finish that York shire was indebted for a very creditable win.
