Rain yesterday afternoon in all probability saved Derbyshire from a second defeat at the hands of the Nottingham eleven in the return match, commenced on the Trent Bridge Ground on Monday. Shacklock had not recovered sufficiently from his resent sprain to help Derbyshire, and Slater, a left- handed fast bowler, who made his first appearance in the County eleven, took his place. Notts went in first on a capital wicket, but except for the excellent cricket of Scotton and Gunn, who put on 80 runs for the third wicket, there was no very note worthy feature in the innings. Scotton was in three hours and a quarter for his 64 in which was only one chance when he had made 51. Derbyshire failed to save a follow on by 1 run, and despite some good cricket by Mr. Eadie and Chatterton, seven wickets had fallen in the second innings for 101, when rain finally put a stop to the game, Derbyshire were then 16 runs on with only three wickets to fall. Alfred Shaw bowled well for Notts, sending down 90 overs for 62 runs and seven wickets. N otts . W. 8cotton, c Disney, b J. I ZINGARI v. GENTLEMEN OF ENGLAND (12- a -S id e ). Considering the lateness of the season, two strong sides were got together for the opening match of the Scarborough festival, begun on Monday last. The Gentlemen could of course have been improved, but, under the circum stances, the team was decidedly a good one. The I Zingari, who were well represented, made the best use of an excellent wicket, and were not out till the second day, Messrs. Walker, Webbe, Cecil Wilson and Evans being the chief contributors to the total of 374. Mr, Walker went in first, and was not out till the score had reached 229, playing, despite two chances fine cricket for his 111. Mr. Webbe, who had to retire hurt, also batted in admirable style. When the Gentlemen went in Mr. Grace showed himself to be in his form, and he had made 68 out of 124 when he unluckily played on. Later on Messrs. Lucas, O’Brien and Bainbridge all played well, the last- named making 76 out of 157 while he was in. Rain interfered with the game yesterday, and except for some brilliant hitting by Mr. G. B. Studd, there was nothing remarkable in the play. The match was drawn as under:— I Z ingari . First Innings*. BOWLING ANALYSIS. D erbysh ire . First Inning \ Second Innings. O. M. R. W . O. M. R. W.
