Cricket 1885
AUG. 27,1885. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 365 point when he had made twenty. His score was made up of twelve fours, four threes, eight twos, and twelve singles. Mr. Gilbart’s howling was attended with unforeseen success, He took six wickets at a cost of 51 runs. Mr. Bush, the wicket keeper, had a hand in the dismissal of five batsmen, four caught and one stumped. The Gloucester shire innings commenced on Thursday evening, and lasted till a quarter to one on Saturday, though rain prevented any play till past three o’clock on the s cond day. Its chief feature was the brilliant cricket of Mr. W G. Grace. He has not been seen to such advantage for some littlo time, and there was not a mistake in his score of 104, which contained thirteen fours, four threes, and six twos. Mr. Brain also played good cricket for his 47, helping Mr. Grace to add 101 runs to the total. Surrey, who were in a minority of 79 runs, commenced their second innings at five minutes past one on Saturday afternoon. The ground as it dried under the hot sun after the rain of Friday helped the bowlers materially, and, except for some fine cricket by Messrs. Bainbridge and Read, no resist ance was offered to Mr. W. G. Grace and Woof. The two amateurs both played admirable cricket, and while they were together 71 runs were added to the score. After Mr. Read’s dismissal, however, the batting collapsed altogether, and the last seven wickets were only responsible for an addition of 37 runs. The unexpected fall of the later batsmen destroyed every chance of what seemed likely to be a drawn game for Surrey, and Gloucestershire got the 38 runs wanted to win for the loss of one batsman, gaining a highly creditable victory by nine wickets with fifty minutes to spare. The Gloucestershire fielding was excellent throughout, and this contributed in no small degree to their success. S u r r e y . First Innings. Mr J.
