Somersetshire, though well represented, fared badly in its return match with Surrey, plajed at Taunton on Monday and Tuesday. In winning the toss Surrey had all the best of the wicket, and Jones and Lohmann were able to bowl with consider able success on the second day. Nine of the Surrey eleven got double figures, though the best cricket was shown by Abel and Mr, W . W . Read, who were responsible for 130 oat of 278 from the bit. The chief features of the Somersetshire batting were the good play of Mr. Radcliffe in the firit, and the vigorous hitting of Mr. Roe in the second, though neither score was free from mistakes. Mr. Radcliffe went in first and was eighth out at 159, of which he had contributed 82, a highly creditable performance. Lohmann took eight wickets for 57, Jones six for 77 runs. Surrey won by an innings and five runs. S u r r e y . Mr.J.Shuter.bBastaid 1 Mr F. W. Bush, c Trass, b Challen........................ 8 Abel, b Winter .. ..5 4 Mr. H. W. Kent had an easy victory in the retura match with Hampshire playei at Tonbr.dge on Monday and Tuesday, winning by an inniugs and 95 runs. This result was c .iefly due to tho good batting of George Hearne, Messrs. Rashleigh, Patterson, and Tonge, and the effective bowling of Wootton and Alec Hearne. The Hampshire batsmen made a very poor show in their first vanture against the two slow bowlers, though they fared better when they went in again. The inning*, indeed, only lasted fifty minutes, six batsmen failing to score. Hearne took five wickets for 15,'Wootton four for eleven runs—extraorJinary figures with the ground in good order. Mr. Rashleigh, the ciptain of the Tonbridge School eleven, made his first appearance in this match. His batting created a very favourable impression, and he bids fair to be of use to the county. Arlington, 123 ; Novello, Ewer, GO for four wickets. Mr. Price played a good not out innings of 68. ESSEX v: LANCASHIRE. Despite some good cricket by Mr. Francis Jones and Mr, C. E. Green, the Essex eleven never had a real chance in their return match with Lancashire, played on the Lyttelton Ground, Leyton, on Monday and Tuesday. They were unfortunate in losing the services of Mr. C. D. Buxton and Silcock, and in the game itself wer eunlucky in having to go in after a long score of 342 runs. Still the batting generally against the bowling of Barlow and Briggs was tame, aud the aggregate of the two innings only amounted to 213. Briggs again showed to great advantage at all points of the game. His 83 was a well-hit innings, containing as many as ten fours. In addition he took six wickets in the second innings for 34 runs. Barlow and he fairly shared the honours for Lancashire. The former, besides batting in very fine style, took altogether nine wickets at a cost of 64 runs. Lancashire won by an innings and 129 runs.
