Cricket 1885

352 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, aug. 20 , ms. L A W C LU B W E E K . This was tha first year the Law Club have had a week’s cricket on their own ground, and it proved a conspicuous success except in the matter of weather on Wednesday, when the rain made the wicket very difficult, and ultimately put a stop to the match at 5 o’clock. Five matches were played, the Law Club being successful in three, while the other two were drawn, one certainly greatly in their favour. In the match on Tuesday Mr. Hemmerde played a fine not out innings of 96. The chief feature of the week, however, was Thursday’s match against the Ne’er-do-Weels, when a record was established in the fact of the first three batsmen making 100 runs each, and the fourth being within 17 runs of that number in one day. To make 513 runs for five wickets is a capital performance at any time, but especially so when the bowling and fielding were so good, for it should be mentioned that it took Messrs. Shaw and Webster an hour and a-half to make the first 40 runs, and no extra was scored until 270 runs had been made from the bat. A fine catch right out “ in the country,” cut short Mr. Hemmerde’s career at 83. and in all pro bability prevented what would otherwise have been a feat altogether unprecedented, viz., 100 each for the first four batsmen in one day. Friday and Saturday were bowlers’ days on a difficult wicket, the chief honours falling to Celling for Rochester, and for the Law Club to Chester, who in Rochester’s second innings took eight wickets for 21 runs; in the same innings Mr. Webster bowled 11 overs in succession for one run. This concluded the season at Willesden Green, where the Law Club have played seventeen matches this year, and had only been defeated in one, viz., that against M.C.C. & Ground. They are now playing a week’s cricket in Kent. LAW CLUB v. HAMPTON WICK C. & G. Played at Willesden Green on August 10. T. a '. y C lu b . O. Webster, b Harris £6 F. W . French,c Atkin W.
