350 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OE THE GAME. aug .20, isss . P A P W O R T H H A L L W E E K . Welcomed on the 3rd of August by the kindliest of hostesses and hosts, in the per sons of Miss and Mr. Cheere at Papworth Hall, and <ff Mrs. and Mr. Williams at St. Peter’s, andmo3tgenially entertained by them with all that generous hospitality couldlsupply through the week ; favoured by a party of ladies who charmed away, only too rapidly, not only the hours not devoted to cricket; playing on a ground replete with all cricket accessories and comforts, and supplied by their indefatigable captain, Mr. S. H. Williams, with the best of wiokets and a capital list of matches, to say nothing of two eminent amateur photographers (who carried off a most unique collection of negatives), and a poet laureate. The fortunate members of the “ home” team in this “ week ’’ found all their desires more than anticipated, and cannot too heartily thank those to whom they are indebted for a visit in all ways so thoroughly enjoyable. Even the ubiquitous storms dealt gently with the Papworth ground, and the “ Hall ” would not have lost the one match they did (by three runs), but for the numerous and substantial mistakes of their opponents’ umpire In regard to individual cricket, Mr. White head, the fast bowler of the team, undoubt edly did most towards securing the victories won, and deserves the greatest credit for bowling as he did, almost continuously through each innings on hard wickets at a great pace. Out of a total of 65 wickets he took 40 at a cost of under 6 runs per wicket, bowling 633 tells for 231 funs. Mr. Leatham also bowled well on wickets not easy to a glow bowler, and Messrs. E. L. Fellowes, Lindsell, and Barnett will “ cut in” usefully m this line. In batting, three of the team stand pro minently out. Mr. Lindtell (who did very much toward winning the last match) with an average of over 62 (once not out). Mr. Williams, notwithstanding a seriously damaged knee, which prevented him even moving quickly, with one of 54 (twice not out), and Mr. Armstrong (once not out), 52. The fielding was decidedly good. Fordham umpired in his usual excellent and satisfactory manner, and the “ Rector ” made the most efficient of ssorers. All felt deeply regretful, as the strains of “ Auld Lang Syne ” died away on the last evening in the smoking-room, that so pleasant a time had come to an end. PAPWORTH HALL v. CAMBRIDGE VICTORIA.
