Cricket 1885

348CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF 'THE GAME. AUG. 20, 1885. YORKSHIRE v. HON. M. B. HAWKE’ S XI. An Eleven collected by the Cambridge Captain, did a capital performance against the full strength of Yorkshire, at Horsforth Hall Park, near Leed*, at the close of last week. The original fixture was Ox ford and Cambridge against Yorkshire, but Mr. Hawke could not get up an eleven of University men and so had to fill up his team with professionals, J. Mills, Scotton, Walter Wright of Notts, and Wade. Ulyett and Hall made a capital start for the County, and the score was 125 before the former retired for a well-hit 73. The remaining bats men only added 90. Mr. Bainbridge taking three wickets for 21 runs. Though Mr. Hawke’s XI. were 65 behind on the first inn ings, Mr. Rock bowled so well when the County went in again that Lee and Peel were the only batsmen to make any stay, the two professionals contributing 73 of 116 from the bat. Mr. Rock’s figures were exceptionally fine. He took eight wickets, (seven bowled) at a cost of only 36 runs, a good feat against a team like that of Yorkshire. Mr. Hawke’s XI. had a difficult tisk when they began their second innings on Saturday, wanting 202 to win. Thanks chiefly to the good batting of Messrs. Wright, O’Brien and Hawke, the runs were got, how ever, for the loss of only seven batsmen, Mr. Hawke’s Eleven winning eight minutes be fore time with three wickets to spare, Y o r k sh ir e . LANCASHIRE. Contrary to the usual experience of the Clifton College Ground, some unusually small scoring marked the return match between these Counties, finished on Saturday last. Mr. W. G. Grace, though he won the toss for Gloucestershire, gave Lancashire the innings, thinking,no doubt, that the wicket, which had been affected by the recent rains, would improve. This, however, was not the case, and Lancashire in going in first gained a decided advantage. Six wickets were down for 65, but a determined stand by Barlow and Robinson altered the game alto gether, and before the latter was out 88 runs had been added, 58 of which had been con tributed by Robinson, a capital display of hitting. Barlow, who went in first, carried out his bat for an admirable score of 62 not out. He was altogether three hours and a quarter at the wickets, and his defence was invaluable. Though Messrs. Grace and Gil bert put on 64 before the former was bowled, Barlow’s bowling, helped by the ground, proved irresistible, and the last nine wickets only added 53. Wh'n Lancashire went in a second time Mr. W. G. Grace and Woof bowled with such success that Robinson and Watson alone got double figures, and the total amounted to 85, of which 14 were extras, Gloucestershire wanted 152 to win, but no one except Mr. Gilbert made any long stand against the bowling of Briggs and Watson, and as the tenth wicket fell at 110 Lancashire were left the winners by 41 runs. Mr.Gilbert played a fine defensive game, carrying his bat through the innings. He was altogether two hours and forty minutes at the wickets, and it is a matter for regret that he did not receive better assistance. L a n c a sh ir e . First Innings. Mr. A . N.
