Cricket 1885

At?G. So, 1885, CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 347 MIDDLESEX v. YORKSHIRE. The Middlesex eleven are to be heartily congratulated on an excellent performance in beating the Yorkshire team on their own ground, at Sheffield yesterday. Though Mr. Webbe won the toss, at the end of an innings the Yorkshiremen had 32 runs in hand, a result entirely due to the good play of Lee and Peel, who were res ponsible for 143 out of 181 from the bat. When Middlesex went in again Mr. O’Brien hit in brilliant style for his 56, and Mr. Hadow, who had batted well in the first innings, was also seen to great advantage, playing admirable cricket for 56. Yorkshire had 195 to win when they entered on their second innings, Burton and West, helped later in the innings by Mr. Robertson, how ever, bowled with such snccess, that Grim- shaw’s 37 was the highest score, and when the tenth wicket fell at 145, Middlesex were left with a highly creditable victory by 49 runs. Everyone will congratulate Mr. Webbe on a we'l deserved success, especially after the ill-luck Middlesex has had of late iu losing so many of its best playera. M id d l e s e x . First Innings. GLOUCESTERSHIRE v. SUSSEX. After some high scoring Sussex won the first match of the Cheltenham Week yester day afternoon, defeating Gloucestershire by four wickets with only five minutes to spare. This success was mainly due to the brilliant batting of Mr. Newham at the finish. Going in first with Mr. McCormick wanting 236 to win, 130 runs were got in an hour and forty minutes, and of the 239 made for the los3 of six wickets he was credited with 141 not out—a brilliant display of batting without a chance. He was altogether at the wickets three hours and a-quarter, and his score was made up of eleven 4’s, six 3’s, twenty 2’s, and 39 singles. Mr. McCormick played good cricket each time, Mr. Brann also hit freely, and Humphreys batted well in the first innings. Messrs. Gilbert (who is in rare form just now), Townsend, Brain, and Page all played well or Gloucestershire, and Mr. Brain’s success, in particular, after a long spell of ill-luck, is gratifying. Altogether 1,07-4 runs were scored in the three days for thirty-four wickets, an average of over 31£ runs. The victory of the Sussex eloven was the more note worthy as they were without Messrs. F. M. Lucas and H. Whitfeld. Mr. Pullen was unable to play for Gloucestershire. G lo u c e ste r sh ir e .
