Cricket 1885

346 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, AUG. 20, 1885. reported in Cricket, are sure to have an enjoyable, as everyone on this side will wish them a successful, trip. T h e Law Club was very near establishing a record last Thursday in the fourth match o f its week. Indeed, I am inclined to doubt whether the achievement o f the first four batsmen is not the best o f the kind. E xactly four weeks ago the Norfolk eleven were credited with what I believe was at the time a unique feat, in the first three batsmen on the side getting into three figures. On this occasion, too, the Lawyers were very near doing a best on record, as not only did Messrs. Shaw, W ebster and Godfrey all get a hundred, but the fourth batsman,Mr. C. L . Hemmerde, o f this year’s W inchester eleven, who was by mistake placed fifth on the list in the scores published in the sporting papers, only failed to reach the century by seventeen runs. I cannot recal another instance where the first four batsmen on a side have all scored so heavily. The members o f the Law Club are to be congratulated on quite an exceptional display of batting. The Club has so far had a very suc cessful season, having only lost one out of seventeen home matches. T ie matches are rare enough, as everyone knows. I cannot remember, though, o f late any so curious as one played at Tenby, on August 10 and 11. The contest, which was between the Eoyal Munster Fusiliers and the Tenby Club, was remarkable, everyone o f the four innings producing a total o f 51. Personally I can only recal one parallel case, a match between Shiere and W oking on August 22, 1818, where each side scored 71 twice. T h e follow ing are the results of the matches played this year up to date by the nine leading Counties. Won Lost Drawn. Notts 5 .. 1 .. 3 Surrey 8 .. 2 .. 4 Yorkshire 6 .. 2 .. 6 Lancashire .. A ball from Mr. Cordeaux, who was bowling for Caius, hit a swallow flying across tbe wicket, and killed it. A swallow, I may add, was killed in precisely the same way in a match between Shillinglee and Godalm ing, at God- aiming, on September 6, 1847, by the late Julius Csesar, in bowling to the E a rl o f W inchester. More than one peculiar incident has occurred during matches since last Thursday. In the fixture between M .C .C . and G . at Eastbourne I am told a rabbit ran across the pitch, while on Thursday last at Clifton in the return between Gloucestershire and Lancashire, as far as I can judge from some of the reports, several of the players enlivened the monotony of the game in a novel fashion by a series o f shies at a seagull, which had escaped from the neighbouring Z o o logical Gardens, as it sailed overhead. U n l e s s I am mistaken, the Eoyal Engineers’ score o f 713 against the Marines at Chatham on Friday and Saturday is the best o f tlie year, excepting only the 745 for four wickets o f West of Scotland Club. These are, I think, the highest innings since 1882. NORTHBROOK (LEE) v. GREEN- H1THE. Played at Lee on August 15. N orthbrook . H. N Smith, b Tipple 0 A. A. Kennard, c Moore, b Steven* .. 12 A. H.
