Cricket 1885

A ug . 13, 1885. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 331 five of which fell to Humphreys, only added 66 runs. The wicket did not play so well on the second day, and Sussex were all dis missed for 176, of which 124 were contributed by three batsmen, Jesse Hide, Humphreys, and Mr. F. M. Lucas. In the follow-on they fared even worse, and the second innings closed yesterday for 157, Mr. Newham and Hum phreys alone showing any noteworthy form. K e n t . Mr.L.Wil 80 D,b J.Hide 13 A. After having 1 11 the best of the play on the two first days, Derbyshire had to b3 content with a drawn game yesterday at the closs of this match, the proceeds of which are to ba given to the highly deserving pro fessional, John Platts. Though they won the toss Yorkshire were aH out for 96, Hall carrying his bat through the innings for 37- The credit of this excellent performance was entirely due to the fast bowler, Shacklock. lie took eight wickets (six of them clean bowled) at a cost of only 45 runs, a brilliant achievement against such a strong team as Yorkshire. When they went in, too, the Derbyshire eleven were seen to advantage, scoring 223 before tho tenth wicket 1ell. Chatterton, Mr. Maynard, and Sugg, who were the chief contributors, all played well, and Shacklock also hit freely. Chatterton followed up his excellent performance against Surrey at the Oval on Saturday with a very fine innings of 62. He did not give a chance of any kind, and his score against the York shire bowlers was an achievement of great merit. At the end of the second day York shire, who were 127 behind on the first ha ds, had lost three of their best b a ts m en, U lyett, H all, and G rim shaw , and were still twenty-five runs behind. Rain stopped the play for some time yester day, but despite some good batting by Grim shaw and Lee, Shacklock and Chatter ton bowled so well that the last seven wickets were secured for an addition of 94, of which the two batsmen named contributed 57. Derbyshire were left w ith 70 runs to win in an hour and a quarter, and though Marlow and Sugg were dismissed in the first over, when time expired, 54 had been got for the loss of only live batsm en, Derbyshire thus wanting only 16 to wTin with five wickets to fall. Everyone w ill congratulate them on their excellent all-round cricket, and the regret will be general that time alone prevented them from , in all probability, securing a most creditable victory. Shacklock and Chatterton were certainly the heroes of the m atch. The former in all took thirteen wickets and scored 27 runs, while CLatterton got 73 for once out, and was credited w im lour ui the ten Yorkshire wickets in the second innings. A collection was made on behalf of Shacklock on the first day, am ounting to nearly ten pounds, a well-deserved recognition of a capital bowling performance. Y orkshire . First Inninga.
