Cricket 1885
318 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. aug . 6,1886. LANCASHIRE v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE, Lancashire had a very easy victory in its first match of the season •with Gloucester shire, played at Old Trafford on Thursday last and two following days, winning by no less than an innings and 92 runs. Pilling, who we are glad to hear is recovering from his recent illness, was unable to keep wicket for Lancashire, and Mayall took his place, making a very favourable debut in the County eleven. On the other side Mr. Pullen took wicket for Gloucestershire in the absence of Mr. J. A. Bush, who was sadly missed on this occasion. The Lancashire eleven, a very strong one, made the best use of their opportunities in winning the toss, and were not dismissed till they had reached a total of 324, of which 33 were extras. For this sum they were mainly indebted to Barlow and Mr. A. G. Steel, who were responsible for 182 of 291 from the bat. The amateur, who played in his very best form, made 74 out of 107 while he was in. He was only an hour and a- half in making his runs, in which were ten fours. Barlow played with the strictest caution. He ought to have been easily stumped when he had got 56, but, on the whole, his innings was a fine display of defensive cricket. He was altogether batting for five hours and three-quarters in the attainment of his 108, which was made up of seven fours, seven threes, ten twos, and thirty-nine singles. It is worthy of remark that this is Barlow’s first innings of a hundred for Lancashire in what are termed first-class county matches. The batting of the Gloucestershire eleven, with the excep tion of Mr. W. G. Grace, was very disappoint ing. Mr. Grace played capital cricket each time, but the support given him was very indifferent, and no one else got twenty runs in either innings. In the match Mr. Steel took nine Gloucestershire wickets for 50 auns—excellent figures. L a n c a s h ir e . Barlow, lbw, b Woof..108 Mr, 0. P. Lancashire, o Gilbert, b Page.. .. 17 Mr. A. G.
