Cricket 1885

CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. aug . o . uss . Owing to an injured hand Beaumont was not able to take his plaee regularly in the Surrey. eleven at the commencement of the season. Though he batted in the first fixture against Essex with fair success he did not bowl until the Middlesex match at the Oval on May 21. On that occasion he was singularly success ful—delivering altogether 58 overs for 48 runs and 12 Wickets—and indeed it was mainly his excellent bowling which secured the dismissal of the Middlesex eleven for two such small totals as 25 and 77. Since that time he has been generally of great use to Surrey. In the first innings of Yorkshire, at Sheffield, he took five wickets for 34 runs, and at the end of the same week against Kent, at Gravesend, he also proved particu larly effective. Beaumont bowls fast round- arm with a very high delivery; Having great command of the ball he is always a good length. He breaks generally from the off though occasionallycoming the other way,and on a wicket not perfectly true is sure to be very dangerous as he gets up very quickly from the pitch. His bitting, too, at times is very useful. He is a fair field. v. CRYSTAL BLACKHEATH MORDEN PALACE. Played at Crystal Palace on July 31 B l a c k h e a t h M o r d e n . T. Ormerod, b Fox .. 48 W . LANCASHIRE, Lancashire, though only represented by a moderate eleven, had an easy win in its re turn match with Derbyshire, finished yester day at Derby, having a majority of ten wickets at the finish. The home team won the toss, but no one made along stay against the bowling of Watson and Barlow, the former of whom took eight wickets at a cost of 37 runs. Barlow and Mr. Lancashire made a good start for Lancashire, and the first wicket fell with the total at 62, of which Barlow had contributed 20. The later bats men, however, failed to maintain the early promise, and on the completion of an innings Lancashire had an advantage of but 72 runs. When Derbyshire went in a second time the ground was drying after heavy rain and was very difficult. Briggs bowled with remarkabl# success, and no one but Mr. Eadie offered any serious resistance. Briggs’s figures on the second afternoon were extraordinary. He bowled altogether 42 overs (29 maidens) for 29 runs and 9 wickets —all the wickets got up to the close of play. Mr. Eadie went in first wicket down with the total at 11, and was lait out. Too muih praise cannot be given him for his careful and j udicious play. D e r b y s h ir e .
