Cricket 1885

J u l y 23 ,1885. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 283 On reading my previous paragraph, anent Shrewsbury’s performance, the thought occurred to me that Shrews bury is not only entitled to the dis tinction of the highest score in an Inter-County fixture at Lord’s but is also the only professional cricketer,as far as I can remember, who has made two hundred in a good match at the Oval. It will no doubt interest many C r ic k e t readers to know that the only three scores of two hundreds made by professionals at Lord’s have been by Nottingham cricketers. The two other instances are Barnes’ 2G6 for M.C.C. & G. v. Leicestershire in 1882, and Gunn’s 203 this season for M.C.C. & G. v. Yorkshire. RICHMOND v. FULWELL, Played at Richmond on July 10. With Mr. Roller, Maurice Read, and Wood away, Surrey had only a weak eleven to oppose Yorkshire at Sheffield on Monday. As a consequence, though they were able to dismiss the Yorksbiremen in the first innings on a wicket slow from rains for 154, the result was hardly at any period of the game in doubt. Eight of the Yorkshire eleven got double figures in tha second innings, though, more than one of them were greatly indebted to mistakes in the field, Ulyett was missed at mid-off when ha had got six, and Hall had also two escapes on the second day, being also let off at mid- off when he had made sixty, and just after wards by the wicket-keeper to a chance of stumping from Abel. Hall’s defensive cricket, though, was of the greatest service. He carried his bat through the innings, con tributing 79 to a total of 285. Surrey when they went in a second time wanted 336 to win, a task as it proved quite beyond their powers. Though Mr. Read again played fine cricket, no one elsa could do much against the fine bowling of Bates. He was indeed very difficult, getting a lot of work on to the ball. Yorkshire won by 188 runs. Surrey suffered greatly from the absence of Wood, their wicket-keeper. The fielding generally, too, was not up to the best standard. Y orkshire . FirBt Inning*. Second Innings. Ulyett, c W . W .
