SURREY. Continuous rain on Saturday, at Liverpool, in all probability saved Surrey from a defeat in their first fixture of the season with Lancashire, began on the ground of the Liverpool Club on Thursday. Neither side had its full strength, and it is worthy of remark that though Mr. Roller was helping Surrey, owing to the severe injury to his arm early in the week at Brighton he was practically of little use. Rain prevented a commencement on the first day until half past twelve o’clock, and Surrey, who went in first, were seen to great disadvantage. Mr. Shuter played capital cricket, but no one else made any stay, and the Captain’s 57 represented over one half of the total from the bat. When Lancashire went in Mr. A. G. Steel batted in his best form, and Briggs hit so freely |that at the close of the day Lancashire were 69 runs on with two wickets still to fall. On the following morning Watson was soon disposed of, and Pilling the last man, came in to join Briggs. These two batsmen hit with extraordinary vigour, and, thanks, in a measure, to some bad fielding, were credited with a perform ance unprecedented, we believe, in an important match. In an hour and forty minutes they made, indeed, 173 runs, the largest number as far as we know recorded, for the last wicket. Though he had several lives, Briggs’ 186 was a very fine display of hitting. He was missed at short-slip, when he had got 45, by Abel, who again let him off at 103, and otherwise he had considerable luck. Pilling’s 61 not out was a good innings, though also not free from mistakes Following on, 247 runs in arrear, Surrey made a better show, and all the seven bats men out got double figures, Mr. Shuter again playing exceedingly well. At the end of the second day Surrey still wanted 34 runs to save the innings with five wickets to fall. Rain prevented any play on Satur day, so that the game was drawn altogether in favour of Lancashire. Just before the close of the second day Platts no-balled Mr. Jowett, one of the Lancashire eleven—a fast right-handed bowler—on the ground that his delivery was not fair. Briggs’ figures were one seven (three for an overthrow), eighteen fours, five threes, twenty-five twcs, and forty-two singles. Surrey suffered greatly fiom the absence of a wicket-keeper, owing to Wood’s injured hand. S urrey . First Innings. Abel, c Yate9, b Barlow .. 4 Mr. J.
