Every cricketer will heartily congratulate Watson, the Lancashire professional, on the complete success of his benefit match on the Old Trafford G round at Manchester, on the three concluding days of last week. Though the Southern Eleven might have been considerably strengthened, they made a capital fight up to a certain p oin t; and, favoured by delightful weather and an excellent wicket, the cricket was interesting throughout. Mr. W . G. Grace and Maurice Read played so well on the first niglt that 78 runs had been made for the South without the loss of a wicket, against a total of 192. On the second morning the score was raised to 99 before Read was bowled, and 30 more were added before Mr. Grace, who had played in his best form for 69,was caught at the wicket. After this wickets fell rapidly, till the arrival of the eleventh batsman, Mr. Horner, who hit freely, contributing 30 of the last 38 runs. When the South went in a second time some fine cricket was shown by Shrewsbury and Barnes, and later some good hitting by Briggs and Bates. The two firat-named while they were together put on 152 runs. Both batted in admirable style, and there was only one chance by Barnes when he had made 48. Shrewsbury’s was a particularly brilliant display. His 101 contained fourteen,
