Cricket 1885

july a, 1885. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 235 NORTH v. SOUTH. First (R. H u m ph re y ’ s B e n e f it .) It ia much to be regretted that the match commenced at the Oval on Thursday last, for the benefit o f Richard Humphrey, should have proved a financial failure. The reasons of the ill success are easy to trace. In the first place, the weather on the first two days was so cold and dull as to reduce the attendance very materially. Mr. W . G. Grace’s inability to play, too, detracted considerably from the character of the match, especially as the South had not got, other wise, the best players. The ground, too, owing to the heavy rain of Thursday morning, was slow, and the superior bowling of the North told to such advantage that the game lost much of its interest after the first day. Mainly through the fine bowling of Wright, whose six wickets only cost 32 runs, and a use ful stand byGunn and Scotton, theNortherners we re able to claim a lead of 171 rum on the first hands. When they went in again, too, tho earlier Southern batsmen, excepting Mr. Gilbert, did not show up well, and at the end of the second day, 40 runs were still wantid to avert an innings defeat. By steady cricket, however, Mr. Boiler and Tester materially improved the aspect of the game on Saturday morning. While they were together 97 runs were added to the score, although six of the Northerners tried their hands with the ball. Mr. Roller at the outset played with great care, though towards the end of his innings he hit freely. He was upwards of three hours at the wickets, and too much praise can not be bestowed on his bitting, more especially as the bowling was exceedingly good. Toster also deserves great credit for his steady cricket. The North had 49 runs to win, and these were got for the loss of two batsmen, Bates and Gunn, both of whom were caught at short-slip by Abel. Total •• C rossland ' s Q ualification f o r L a n cashire . — The committee of the Marylebone Club has pissed the following resolution:— “ That it having been established to tho satisfaction of the committee that Crossland has resided in his native county, Notts, from October, 1884, until April, 1885, this com mittee is of opinion that he no longer possesses a residential qualification for Lan cashire.” This question came before the M C.C. Committee on an objection made by the ISotts Committee to Crossland playing for Lancashire on the ground that he, being a Nottinghamshire born man, did not reside in Lancashire regularly and continuously. The result of this resolution will probably be to exclude Crossland from county cricket during this and next season.
