The Surrey eleven, with Mr. Roller and Barratt absent, succeeded in defeating Cam bridge University at the Oval on Saturday last by 131 runs. The game was throughout rather in favour of the county, and on the whole the Cantabs did not show to the same advantage at any point. Mr. Bainbridge, who had been scoring so well in the earlier matches, was unfortunate in both innings, and the best batting on their side was by Messrs. Wright, Turner, Buxton and Kemp. The two last-named, who are both freshmen, are likely to be of great use to Cambridge in the future. Mr. Buxton, who was in the Harrow eleven last year, played with con fidence, and showed really good cricket. His style though, is not so taking as that of Mr. Kemp, who was in the Shrewsbury team of 1884. The latter’s off-play in particular was very fine and as he is very young there is reason to believe that he will develope into a really first-class bat. The best bowling on the Cambridge side was undoubtedly that of Mr. Rock, who kept a good length through out, and at times got a lot of work on to the ball. In all he took ten Surrey wickets at a cost of 108 runs. The most noticeable feature in Surrey’s cricket was the exception ally good batting of Maurice Read. He did not make a mistake in either innings, and as he scored 147 runs for only once out he deserves the fullest credit for a fine per formance. S urret . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. M. P.
