Scotton, the Notts professional, took five wickets for 6 run8. He clean bowled four wickets in his last over, accomplishing the hat trick with the first three balls and taking the remaining wicket with the last ball of the MARYLEBONE CLUB AND GROUND v. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. The Cambridge eleven brought their trial matches to a finish yesterday, when a strong team of M.O.C. beat them at L ord’s with eight wickets to spare. Though their batting in the first innings was tame and disap pointing, when they went in again better cricket was shown, and eight of the team got double figures. The bulk of the run-getting, though, was done by Messrs. Hawke, Wright, Rock, and Bainbridge, who contributed 157 of 218 from the b°_t. Mr. Rock was in while 98 runs were got, and tlie three others named all showed to great advantage. The Cap tain in particular played in quite his best form, and his score of 73 was got without a chance. Barnes and Mr. A . G. Steel, whose first match it was in London this year, were responsible for 1 2 0 out of 228 made by M.C.C. from the bat. Both played excellent cricket, particularly Barnes, whose seventy- five was in every way worthy of his reputa tion. Flowers did a noteworthy bowling performance in the first innings of Cam bridge. In forty-five overs he took eight wickets at a cost of but 22 runs. Mr. G. B . Studd’s second score of 59 not out was a first-class display of batting. Mr. Knatchbull- Hugessen played for Mr. J. A . Turner, who had to go to Cambridge to take his degree. Score and analysis :— T he UniVERsnY. First Innings* Seond Inning). Mr. C. W. Owing to recent injury Humphreys was not able to help Sussex, and Messrs. F. M. Lucas and Whitfeld were also away. On the other hand several prominent amateurs were not in cluded in the Lancashire eleven, so that neither side was seen quite at its best. The scoring was very even throughout, and Lancashire was only able to claim a majority of 33 runs. Mr. Newham and Tester were the principal run-cetters for Sussex. Mr. Brann, who has always scored well for Ardingly College, also showed excellent batting. This is only, we believe, his second appearance in County cricket. Mr. Haigh hit freely, though with some luck, in the first innings of Lancashire, but the best batting was shown by Mr. W. E. Leach, who played well each time. Mr. R. C. Leach, too, showed good form in the first innings; he was at the wickets while 110 runs were got. The bowling figures of Barlow, Briggs, and Arthur Hide deserve notice. L ancashire .
