A strong eleven of Gloucestershire suc ceeded in defeating a fairly good team of Middlesex at Lord’s on Friday last after two days of very interesting cricket. The f coring on the first day was considerably above the average, no less than 522 runs being made for the loss of only seventeen wickets. The feature of this day’s cricket was the fine batting of Mr. Stanley Scott for Middlesex. He went in second wicket down with the total at 14 and carried out his bat for 135. He was at the wicket i two hours and fifty- five minutes, and with the exception of two chances after he had got a hundred, his innings was without a mistake. Though Middlesex bad a lead of 58 runs on the first innings Mr. W . G. Grace and Woof bowled so well on Friday in the second innings that no one made a long stay, and Mr. Robertson proved to be the highest scorer with a well hit 25. Gloucestershire, when they went in a second time, had a far from easy task before them, wanting 178 to win. By capital cricket, though, Messrs. Grace and Gilbert put on 85 runs before the latter was bowled, and this stand decided the issue of the match. By fine hitting Messrs. Townsend and Pullen knocked off the last 78 runs, and Gloucestershire was able to claim a most creditable victory with eight wickets to spare. Mr. Pullen’shitting at the close was brilliant. In the last over ho scored three fours. To get 180 runs for the loss of only two wickets was an excellent performance, and Messrs. Grace, Gilbert, Pullen and Townsend deserve full credit for it. W oof’s bowling again proved very effective. In the second innings Mr. Grace and he were unohanged. M iddlesex . First Innings. Mr. G. B. S udd, c Brain, b W o o f ..........................0 Mr. A. YORKSHIRE, Rain materially interfered with the play in the first match of the season between these counties, played at Manchester on Thursday last and two following days. Ulyett, who had sprained his ankle in the match with Cambridge earlier in the week, was unable to assist Yorkshire, though, on the other hand, Lancashire had certainly not its full strength. At the end of the first day the game seemed to be all in favour of York shire, who had against a total of 168 scored 117 for the loss of only two wickets. On resuming, though, on Friday morning the wicket suited Barlow and Watson so well that the innings closed for a total of 158, to which Grimshaw—who, following up his excellent performance against Cambridge on the previous Wednesday, played capital cricket for his 74—and Hall contributed 114. The feature of the second innings of Lan cashire was the stand by Messrs. Leach and Hornby. The latter, who had made 61 in the first attempt, was again very successful, hitting with great vigour for his 34. Mr. Leach, who assisted Mr. Hornby to put on 42 runs, batted in good form. He was in altogether two hours and three quarters for his 39. Emmett’s bowling was very effective on the second day. He took 7 wickets for only 50 runs. The ground was all in favour of the bowlers when Yorkshire went in on Saturday, wanting 149 runs to win. Hall was in an hour and three quarters for 31, and his careful play was of immense use to his side. Six wickets had fallen for 75 when rain stopped play altogother, and the game was drawn, Yorkshire having still 74 to get with only four wickets to fall. Harrison, the fast bowler of 1883, appeared for the first time this season in the Yorkshire eleven, and with fair success. There was not an extra in either innings of Yorkshire. L ancashire .
