Cricket 1885
JUNE 18, 1885. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAMB. 203 SUSSEX v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Mainly through the brilliant batting of Mr. F. M. Lucas, of Harrow and Cambridge, Sussex, though they lost the toss, were able to claim a very easy victory in this match at Brighton yesterday. Mr. Lucas, who is a left-handed batsman, went in first wicket down at 9, and was not out at the finish of the innings, having scored 215 out of 392 runs got during his stay. He was batting for six hours and three-quarters, and, though missed more than once, he gave no actual chance until he was about 150. His hitting was very hard and clean, and his innings was throughout a most brilliant display. His total was made up of thiity-four fours, one three, fourteen twos, and forty-eight singles. Mr. Ellis, who played well, stayed with Mr. Lucas while 126 runs were got. The chief feature of the Gloucestershire batting, after Mr. Pullen’s finely got second score of 70, was the stand by Mr. Bush and Gregg at the close of the first innings. The professional hit freely, and as many as 74 runs were added for the last wicket. The ground did not play quite so well as usual yesterday afternoon when Gloucestershire were in for the second time, and Sussex in the end won easily by an innings and two runs. Messrs. Brain, Page, E. M. Grace, and Townsend were absent from the Gloucestershire eleven, Mr. Newham and Juniper from that of Sussex. G loucestershire . First Innings. Mr. W. G. Grace, o F. M. Though tho Univer sity had a lead of 39 runs on the first in nings Ulyett and Grimshaw punished their bowling severely yesterday, and it was chiefly to the play of thcs3 two profes sionals that the game presented such a favourable appearance for them at the finish. Ulyett had made 84 of the 126 runs got, when he sprained his ankle so badly that he was compelled to leave the field. Grim shaw, however, continued to play fine cricket until the finish, when he was still in possession. He had contributed 129 out of 240 runs while he was in, and with the ex ception of a difficult charce when he had made 25 his innings was without a fault. First Inninga. Ulyett, c Smith, b Rock . Though rain prevent d any play in this return mutch at Manchester, on Tuesday, by no means the strongest eleven of Lancashire succeeded in defeating Oxford University shortly bef->re time y<sterday. The Oxonians, who were 95 runs behind on the first innings, were not seen to good advantage yesterday on the heavy wicket, aud it was mainly though tbe vigorous hitting oi Mr. Cochrane, who nude 25 out of 30 ruus while he was in, that Lancashire were forced to go in a Second time. Mr. Brain ployed excellent cricket, but no one stopped very long with him. Lancashire won with nine wickets to spare, a rcsu’t mainly due to the good batting of Barlow, Robinson, and Mr. Lancashire, in conjunction with the effective bovlirig of Briggs and Watson. The bowling of Briggs was, indeed, the feature of the ma.eli. In all he took eleven Oxford wickets at a cost of only 60 rues.
