Cricket 1885

202 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OP, THE GAME. June is, ms. King, who went in first for tlie Bruns wick Club against Craigmount yester day week, and was not out at the close of the day, with 115 runs to his credit. King, who played for Surrey on a few occasions, figured as one of the Colts of that county as long ago as 1861, and his achievement of last week is a very creditable one for a player who has been actively engaged in the cricket field. He migrated to Scotland many years ago, and Scotch cricketers, for whom he has worked hard, and with whom he is very popular, will be specially pleased to find that he still retains his powers of run-getting. MARYLEBONE C. & G. v. HAMPSHIRE C. & G. Chiefly through the effective bowling of Gunn and Attewell, and the good batting of Davenport, the Marylebone Club had an easy victory in this match, played at Southampton on Monday and Tuesday, by an innings and 113 runs. Attewell and Gunn bowled through both innings of Hants, the former taking eight wickets for 70, the latter eleven for 85 runs. M.C.C. AND G. Mr. J. S. DERBYSHIRE. A strong batting side of the Marylebone Club and Ground dereatednot the best eleven of Derbyshire on Tuesday last at Lord’s by an innings and seventeen runs. Though Barnes and Flowers were the only bowlers in the Marylebone tenm, the Derbyshire batsmen, with the exception of Mr. Docker, \Y. Chat- 1e ton, and (Jropper, made but a moderate show, and the result was never in doubt. The best fea'ure of the ma‘ch was the batting of Mr. Marshall, an amateur who used to identified with Northumbrian cricket, for the Marylebone Club. He showed very good cricket for his eighty, and this innings, in conjunction with his fine score against Northamptonshire last week at Lord’s, should place him high in the list of Marylebone batsmen. Mr. Docker was unfortunately too unwell to bat in the second inning3 of the county. D erbyshire . First Inning?. The Surrey eleven had another easy win in their return match with Essex, played on the Lyttelton Ground at Leyton on Monday and Tuesday. In winning the toss they had all the best of the wicket, and Mr. W. W. Read took advantage of it fully, going in second wicket down and carrying out his bat for a most brilliant score of 214. His hitting all-round was of the finest descrip tion, and his innings was altogether free from a mistake. His figures consisted of twenty- five fours, twelve threes, nineteen twos, and forty singles. The wicket did not wear well and the Essex eleven were thus seen at a great disadvantage when they went in to bat. Mr. St-evens played pluckily in the follow-on, but Pickett was the only batsman able to get double figures ea,cli time, and Surrey at the finish had 174 runs and an innings to spare. Mills made his first appearance fur Surrey in this match. SCKIiEV. Mr. M. P. Bowden, c McEwen,b Bishop .. 0 Abel, b Bishop .. .. 21 Mr. K.J. Diver,b Bishop 5 Mr.W.
