The Surrey eleven, who had had unin terrupted success in their earlier matches, were beaten for the first time this season at the Oval on Friday last. The victory of Gloucestershire was the more creditable as in the absence of Messrs. E. M: Grace, H. V. Page, and F. Townsend, they had not their best team to oppose the full strength of Surrey. Mr. W. G. Grace, though he won the toss, gave his opponents the innings, judging as the ground was a little slow at the outset that in going in second he would get the advantage of its improved condition. Considering the excellence of the wicket the scoring on both sides fell much short of the general expectation. The chief feature of the first innings was the excellent play of Messrs. W. W . Read and W . G. Grace. The former scored 73 out of 303 while in without a mistake, and no fault could be found with Mr. W. G. Grace’s 55, a display up to his best standard. Though Surrey had a lead of 37 runs on the first hands, their batting was very disappointing when they went in again, and they were all out for a very poor score of 91. Gloucestershire, with only 129 to win, thanks to some good play by Messrs. Brain and Gilbert, made a capital start, and at one time the score was 82 with only one wicket down. An easy victory for Gloucestershire then seemed certain, but after this the Surrey eleven played up well, and when Mr. Grace, who did not go in till fifth wicket, was caught at 110 without a run, the excitement became great. When the eighth wicket fell seven runs were still wanted to win. Woof, how ever, played very steadily at the crisis, and Gloucestershire were able to pull through, after a most interesting game, with two wickets to spare. Woof bowled in fine form for the winners. In all he took twelve wickets for 134 iuns. HARROW SCHOOL v. HOUSEHOLD BRIGADE. Played at Harrow on June 13. The School scored 412 for the loss of only seven Tickets. H arrow S chool . E.
