Cricket 1885

194 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J ttne is , isss . bowling of Woof, Burton, and Rylott, was a capital display of batting. His good p er form a n ce in the last trial led to the belief that he would be successful in the Inter- University match, and he realised thoS9 expectations fullyi opening the Oxford score with a well played fo rty - two—the highest on the side—and helping with Mr. Hine- Haycock to put on 63 ru n s for the first wicket. Successful as he had been for Oxford, though, he was even more fortunate for his county last summer. His reputation, indeed, was fully established by the fine C ricket he showed for Gloucestershire in 1884, and two of his in n in g s are lik e ly to be well remembered for so m e tim e to come. In the first match against the Australians at GSifton, in the second innings he scored 108 out of 181 while he was in— a fine dis play of hitting, although it should be stated that he was missed before he had made a notch. On this occasion Mr. Pullen and he put on 159 while they were together, and against Surrey on the same ground, nearly three weeks later, when he punished the Surrey bowlers severely to the tune of 143, he helped with Painter to increase the Gloucestershire score by 145 runs. Though his attitude is a little peculiar, Mr. Brain’s is a very difficult wicket to get as he plays with a particularly straight bat. In addition to a good defence he gets very hard on to the ball and hits well all-round, his driving being especially good. He bowls righthand with a very high delivery, and having a break from the off has at times proved effec tive. He is an excellent field, more especially in the country, where ha is very reliable.
