june li, 1685. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 181 LANCASHIRE v. DERBYSHIRE. The Derbyshire eleven are to be eon' gratulated on a capital performance in their first match of the season, with Lancashire, completed on Saturday at Old Trafford. Though they won the toss and went in on a good wicket, five of their best batsmen were out for only six runs, and at the end of an innings they were as many as 161 runs to the bad, Rain prevented more than an hour and a half’s play on Friday, and during this time Derbyshire were able to make 95 for the loss of two wickets in their second innings, entirely through the excellent play of Crop per, who was not out with 64. On Saturday Mr. Eadie and Sugg also showed fine cricket, and, with some useful aid from Wood- Sims, helped to raise the Derbyshire total to the respectable sum of 318. Mr. Eadie made a very promising first appearance for Derby shire. His 62, in which were five fours, five threes and seven twos, was in every sense a creditable display of batting. Nor can too much praise be given to Sugg, who carried out his bat for 81, made by thoroughly good cricket. Lancashire had 158 to get to win when they entered on their second innings, and aS only an hour and forty minutes remained of time there seemed very slight chance of any other result than a draw. Five of the best Lancashire wiekets, though, were down for 63 when Cropper was put on, and his bowling proved so effeotive just at the critical point of the game that Derbyshire were able to get the last batsman, Littlewood, out ten minutes before time. Cropper took four of the last five Lancashire wickets at a cost of only sixteen runs, and it was mainly to his bowling that Derbyshire were able to claim a most creditable victory by 73 runs. Pilliog was unable to keep wicket for Lancashire, and Littlewood, who acted as his substitute, was not up to the mark. D erbyshire . First Innings. Second Innings.
