Rain interfered with play in this match afc Oxford on Saturday, and caused it finally to be given up as a drawn game. It was the first appearance of the Surrey eleven at Oxford, and they made an excellent show, remaining at the wickets until the second morning and realising a big total of 424 before the last wicket fell. The chief merit of this performance was due to three members of the team—Mr. Diver, Mr. Read, and Lohmann. The two Amateurs put on 138 runs for the third wicket, and by cricket of the finest kind, neither giving a chance. Mr. Diver’s score of 143 is the highest he has made in a county match. During his long innings, as far as we could see, there were only two faulty strokes, and there was certainly nothing that could be called a life. His figures consisted of a five, twenty-two fours, six threes, twelve twos, and eight singles.. Later on Lohmann hit with great vigour, and at one time while he was in 100 runs were got in the hour. Though he ought to have been caught twice, his performance was a very creditable one for a young player. The chief features of the Oxford batting were the partnerships of Messrs. Buckland and Newton in the first, and Hildyard and Newton in the second innings. Seventy runs were added during the wicket keeper’s stay with Mr. Buckland, seventy- eight while he was in with Mr. Hildyard. At the finish Oxford were 36 on with three wickets to fall. S urrey .
